when the ball carrier throws the football to any teammate behind him or directly next to him (i.e. on or behind a line running through the ball and parallel to the line of scrimmage). In a lateral pass the ball is not advanced, but unlike a forward pass a lateral may be attempted from anywhere on the field by any player to any player at any time.

Or basically anyone who didn't start as a first year at the firm (with the exception of a credit due to a clerkship). So if you worked for the SEC or AUSA or perhaps in-house and come in as a mid-level you're still a lateral.

when a partner throws the associate to any firm behind him (in the vault rankings) or directly next to him (i.e. same vault range). In a lateral pass the associate is not advanced, but unlike a forward pass a lateral may be attempted from anywhere in the associate's career by any partner to any competitor at any time.
