Just one example ... Suppose a rioting mob descends upon a strip mall, sees that one store has a "Black Owned Business" sign, and torches that store. Now suppose a a rioting mob descends upon a strip mall, sees that one store has a "Black Owned Business" sign, and torches the next store. Both were crimes where the target was chosen on the basis of race. But the latter will never be treated as a hate crime. |

1- It's not thought crime, it's just an escalation for certain very specific crimes.
2- Why would anybody be against hate crime expansion to other crimes? Isn't this behavior we want to dissuade?
3- Expansion of hate crime to extremely low level, nebulous offenses like "harassment" so that now any action that accompanies wrongthought is a felony that we can use to out the person and publicize their wrongthought. |
