Coming out of undergrad at a lower Ivy (e.g., Penn, Columbia, Cornell), how good do your grades need to be to be hired as a first year analyst at McKinsey NY? What is the starting salary like (with bonus)?

your interviewing skills and previous internship experience is probably more important.

i know a guy with okay grades from one of those schools and not very good internship experience working in one of their nonNYC offices.

I'm sure at their TAMU recruit session they downplay grades in the hopes of getting some Texas tail. I know people there, and they had great grades and subpar personalities. Bottom line, if you have good grades at Penn, H, MIT, S, etc., and don't defecate on the interviewer, you'll get hired.

Just get hired out of TAMU as an analyst at a less prestigious bank like Berkshire or Raymond James, attend S or NU for B school, graduate near the top (specialize in equity), and work at a large bank for 5 yrs and then move to venture cap or a hedge fund.

To work at a lower bank, just get good grades as an econ or math major. Once you're at the bank, that coupled with your good grades/GMAT will lock you into a top 10 b-school. Once there, bust your ass, since you have no connections and don't want to waste say going to Tuck for a job back at Ray James.

I went to one of those schools you mentioned or something around there (non HYP ivy)

I heard that nyc is the most competitive and that tends to get filled with grads from Harvard and Yale and the like, so shoot for a non nyc office. The people I know who got offers out of undergrad at McKinsey ended up at non-nyc offices, especilly ones where they had a tie to the area

I have no idea, don't know anything about bschool. I just live with someone who works at one of those big name consulting firms, so I know it can be done.

But I think they all do similar work and they all travel out of the office often to go see clients anyway.

eta: not all consulting firms are nyc-headquarted though...i think a lot are in boston.

just major in econ/finance and get at least cum laude...it should be enough to get an interview. The interview will be key if you are set on strat consulting or ib.

Actually, do econ or math (applied math if you can speclialize in UG). Finance is a watered down econ degree.

Depends on the school. Many of the above don't even offer finance degrees. Wharton offers a BS in Econ at the UG level, but you can have a concentration in Finance along with it.

I would recommend this approach if you want business consulting.

yes econ is safest bet but will still need cum laude at a min, but may get away with a lesser grade with ivy degree...but grades only get you to door & interviews (all 2 or 3 of them) will solidify an offer.
