Saw that shit all of the time on LSN. It's great that it costs 45K less, but you're still shelling out like 200K all in to attend, probably more. Even with an SA position, still, that's 120-140K+ (factoring in loan interest rates). If you *don't* get a biglaw job, what are you gonna do?

For 30K, I say do it. Oh what a scholar I must be.

30K is not life crushing. You could literally be unemployed and end up fine. You can pay 30K back working at Barnes and Noble.

The key is being smart about law school. If you want to practice law, gun like fuck 1L year. Cop that OCI bid. But if you don't get a large firm gig, either be prepared to drop out, or, use your time right. 30K is not life crushing.

That said, if it's 30K on top of losing 3 years of income, you might want to think again.

yes, it's employment stats are great. I don't know your background, but I think NUs employment statistics are what they are in part because a VERY high percentage of NU law students are older, and have work experience. This may not sounds like a reason, but i've heard from some bros who went K-JD that they have a hard time competing with the WE people. Don't know why or that it makes sense, just what i've heard.

that being said, i'd much rather be in chicago than AA for 3 years

i honestly don't know why though i think it may be more a result of firms rating candidates who previously worked in banking, at some tech company, or even in government above people with no work experience; not as much about the aspiness of the students, i'd think both schools are similar in that respect

i'd do NU over UM too i think, oh shit actually i just looked up the rankings. I thought there was a bigger gap than 9 v. 12, yea i'd 90% do NU

Michigan ranks higher but Northwestern seems to do better with firm placement. Northwestern seems to have better Chicago placement and natural ties. Older students. Better city for law school (AA is cool though).

Michigan is slightly cheaper. Football would be fun.

i would say nu. mich law is historically more "prestigious" but you cannot underestimate the importance of being local, esp if you dont get a sa at oci. plus you can extern/intern/work during law school, which is not only important for finding post-grad work, but also important for staying sane. but to be fair, i really like aa, and the col would be much cheaper there. It seems like a really cool place to go to school, just make sure you are going to be in the top 1/x (1/3? 2/5?) and will get a job during oci. the older you get the more it tilts towards chicago.

Yes, boomer flame. It used to have legit prestige but no one in this generation thinks so, regardless of where it sits in the rankings. If you have a midwest thing, I'd go to Northwestern over Michigan at this point.

Yeah, kinda. Going there worked out fine for me, but I feel like I'm one of the last to go to Michigan and get biglaw while getting median-ish grades. If the choice is Northwestern or Michigan, go to Northwestern -- at least then you'll be in a good city and won't have to pretend to care about Michigan sports.

Something like that (not going to say when exactly). Things may have improved for Michigan by now, but I doubt it.

By the way, it's really not that fun to live in Ann Arbor. I had an undergrad prof friend who got his Ph.D. there and always talked about how cool it was -- but really it's not (except for a few highlights).

Socially, it's just tons of students of every possible variety. Even though it was great to hang out with students in college, for some reason it's just depressing in law school. To find anyone not connected with the school, you practically have to go to Ypsilanti.

Do they still have the "wolverine scholars" program for their TTT UGs? Their dumbfuck undergrads were too stupid to get good LSAT scores and were dragging down the law school's USNWR ranking, so a few years ago they told kids with high GPAs they could go to law school there as long as they didn't take the LSAT and drag down the numbers. What a festering TTT in decline. To think it was once a T3 law school...

Michigan is really good. Great traditional prestige, and a lot of partners still think of it as a top=3 or whatever law school.

I'd take it over northwestern. better clerkship placement too:

Michigan is plummeting like a rock because it takes so many of its shitty B1G undergrads though. Why not go to a higher ranked law school? Are you one of those UM UGs who couldn't do any better?

Meh. Must be a problem with the data they collected. Think of it this way: do you think any good biglaw firm would dip lower in the NU class than the Mich class? Of course not.

Only have experience with NYC V10. Summer classes were 60% YHCN with a sprinkling of SCMP and random schools. Not sure firm hired any NU folks, come to think of it.

NU also beat them in 2010. And 2012. And just about every other year they've collected data. City schools tend to outperform their rank. Having ties to a single major market matters more than a few spots in the rankings.

Interesting. That could make sense. I don't doubt that NU is better for Chicago. But for NYC -- and I imagine every other large market -- I'd bet Mich places better.

Probably a toss up in NY, Michigan probably travels a bit better on the west coast. But I think having a clear home market trumps that.

btw there is a big difference b/w "living" in chicago and being some useless degenerate law student. so, it makes a difference whehther or not your parents are gonna be bankrolling your existence for three years (ps, three years is a really long time).

It costs about as much to live in Chicago as it does in Ann Arbor. Prices for rent, food, liquor, gas, etc., are about the same.

it doesnt cost the same at all. and most of the benefits of living in a big city are totally lost on a law student, unless he or she is being bankrolled by parents.

Ok, fine, according to this cost-of-living calculator, you're right: http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/cost-of-living/. Here's the savings you get from living in Ann Arbor as opposed to Chicago:

Groceries - 14% less

Housing - 21% less

Utilities - 10% more

Transportation - 12% less

Health Care - 9% less

I don't think this difference is huge, or at least it didn't feel that way. Maybe I didn't notice the difference because I was living nearby the law school, where the rents are higher and stuff is generally pricier.

Also, it's pretty easy to do fun stuff for cheap in Chicago. Go to one of the dozens of good BYOs, spending about $20 with alcohol factored in. Go see a band at the Metro or Lincoln Hall for $20 or so. Etc.

If you will graduate with little to no debt, and you aren't weighing law school against consulting and/or banking offers, and you really have an interest in law (whatever that means), going to a good law school is not the worst thing to do.
