Applied to LS this cycle, but then discovered XO and scamblogs and increasingly realized how much law blows. Have a 30k fellowship in DC in a field that will be really fun but probably never lucrative and future is uncertain after fellowship.

Options as I see it:

-Go ahead and take it now

-Ask for deferral, do fellowship and then go

-Refuse, do fellowship and apply again next fall going for equal money at better school or Harvard admission (got waitlisted this cycle)

-Fuck it, don't do law.

I'd be interested in law if it weren't for how completely terrible it seems to be these days. Any hope for it getting better?

Before anybody asks, I also could attend Columbia at sticker, Chicago with 70k, Texas for free. I didn't apply to a lot of mid-T14's because I knew I wasn't 100% set on going and wanted a few places that I could apply to later without them being mad I refused them in the past.

This. The gap between the other t14s, outside of HYS that is, is really exaggerated on this site. I cannot stress enough how much better it is to go to Cornell w/ 150k than Columbia at sticker. The difference in outcomes for most people will not be significantly different. A slightly larger % of the class at Columbia will work for elite firms and snag elite clerkships. A slightly larger % of the class at Cornell will be shit out of luck. If you were smart enough to get into that slightly thicker top layer at Columbia (say the top 30%), then you will probably be smart enough to get into the thinner top layer at Cornell (say top 15%). If you were going to fall into the thick bottom layer at Cornell (say the bottom 30%), then you would probably have fallen into the thinner bottom layer at Columbia (say bottom 15%). For most people, there will be essentially no difference in outcome, certainly not 150k worth of difference.

Agreed, the notion that there is some big difference between any of the schools 4-14 is largely just wishful thinking on the part of HYS rejects at Columbia.

Think long and hard about whether you want to be a lawyer. If you do, then take it. 150k scholarship is basically full tuition. Going to Cornell and working hard gives you a better than 50% shot of coming out making 160k in NY with very little debt. Not bad.

That's the thing, though. Whether I want to be a lawyer is very contextual. Biglaw sounds fucking horrible and would make me want to kill myself, but if law will start improving or I can be sure it's just a pit-stop on the way to a better jerb, that's acceptable. Other jerbs, whether in government or at a public interest place, sound a lot more interesting, but the field is still saturated as fuck.

On the plus side, I actually like my flyover state and would totally love living there or somewhere similar long-term. How hard is it to lateral from biglaw to flyover midlaw or government?

i would try to postpone a year and do your fellowship

i am a strong proponent of not going from UG to LS

you'll likely do your fellowship, realize you have good exit opps out of that paying something decent, and in three years you would have been in LS you'll get up to six figs assuming your fellowship is someething worthwhile that will give you exp and connections and you hustle

no debt and if you really want to go to LS your fellowship and any other WE will make you competitive for schollies at better places and admission to YHS

It's not as if he'd be going to the Ivy League Cornell, but rather the Law School Cornell--perhaps an affiliated state college at Cornell.

Just a general question: Given that I didn't apply to several other T14's (Michigan, Penn, Duke, NU) and also got LOLwaitlisted at UVA, is there really any downside to waiting a year? I figure apps will drop again, my GPA will be higher than it was this cycle, I'll have WE, and I can apply right away in September because I have all the materials done. I figure with all that I'd have a shot at Harvard and could score 150k at a mid-T14.

Anybody know how much a previous refusal to attend will hurt you at a school?

You probably won't get a substantial boost anywhere but NU, and they're no better than Cornell and unlikely to give you an equivalent deal. If you want law, either convince Cornell to defer your scholarship or go now.

With a 173 LSAT and some effort you should be in the top 1/3rd of your class at Cornell.

If you're from the South or West, go to Texas.

From the Great Plains, so no Texas connections beyond not having an innate shitlib hatred of it.

In any case, if there's not some huge penalty from reapplying later I think I'll do my fellowship for the time being and maybe take another shot at Harvard.

Also, I figure getting away from school and working for a while will be helpful in determining if I really want to head back for law. Maybe that's just gap year flame or something but it sounds like a cogent idea.

Great Plains is probably a good enough regional connection to get a job at one of the big Texas firms. You probably have to do pretty well 1L year to get a job at one though. If you're willing to play the game your first year, then you could fuck around the next 2 years and enjoy Austin. I didn't go to Texas though. Maybe someone else could give better advice.

He needs to do more than put in "some effort" ... I think the lower-t14 mindset (awareness of extreme bimodal outcomes -- top people to V5 and COA, bottom people get nothing) breeds a ton of competition and gunning. I took it relatively easy and finished outside the top 1/3 at a DNC despite having a 175 LSAT. Still got biglaw with very little debt... but if I had been even more overconfident, it could have turned out worse.
