in terms of quality of life + money.

Sure top NBA guys make more. But golfers don't need to run around, sweat and get injured all the time. And there is also senior's league.

best job in the world is being a top poker player, like phil ivey. the guy makes like $30 mil a yr playing poker online or in vegas casinos. i don't think it gets any better than that.

The same thing could be said by basketball players about golfers. "You'd rather be swinging a stick and walking around grass than prove your manhood against big black b-ball gangsters?"

Assuming that your job doesn't dictate your life, I would care less about the environment that i am put in. So long as I get enough time to mottles and bottles, I am all good.

there are like 6 tournaments a year that all the top players clear their schedules for.

scrubs who are struggling to keep their cards though play in whatever events they can get into and often have to play monday qualifiers to get in. People thought it was cool that they gave an exemption to that 14 yr old chinese kid when in reality he was taking the spot of someone trying to feed his family.

running around and sweating for 42-44 minutes isn't that fucking had. any top-flight golfer does lots of conditioning and strength shit these days, anyway.

you can still play 20 yrs in the nba. a pro golfer who has amazing talent isn't going to be able to maintain his top status even if he can play longer. and a top nba player who retires has tons of other business opportunities what are much more fun and much more lucrative than playing on the fucking senior golf tour. e.g., look at magic.

credited. but my point is that slaving away on the senior tour for 300+ days a year for the rest of your life isn't credited, and it's not a valid response to say that you can play golf for way longer than you can play in the nba.

of course. i think that's true of most top athletes in most sports. i have no doubt that peyton manning loves watching tape all day and figuring out his game plan, thinks he has a dream job, and doesn't see that as "work."

the premise of this thread, though, is to find a cushy job where you don't have to work.

what are the finances like for someone at your dude's level -- what % of his earnings get eaten up to pay to travel expenses, caddies, agents, coaches and other bullshit? how much extra is he making from sponsorships and anything else being a relative n00b but still with a pga card?

top 100 is 1 million earnings, but i have no sense of what the "n00bs" are pulling in. i know the tennis tour very well, and a guy around the top 100 on the atp tour who doesn't break thru is living a pretty tough life.

being #100 doesn't get you into the main draw at most good events outside the grand slams. so a lot of weeks, you're playing in the qualifying for shit money and hoping to earn a spot in the main draw, which means extra matches and extra time showing up for the qualifying.

and there's tremendous pressure to keep winning, or else if you don't win, your ranking slips, and you're going to be relegated to playing even shittier level tournaments.

you've got to pay a ton of money to have a coach travel with you. and you're paying all your expenses, flying internationally to shitty cities. (tbf, it's better than the #200 guy who is playing tourneys in tajikistan. seriously.)

every week is basically a struggle as to whether you'll come out in the red or the black, as far as your coach's weekly fee and your travel expenses vs. how much you're making in prize money from that torney.

Legit tour noobs barely break even between caddy fees, coaching, travel expenses etc. And if you are on the Nationwide tour, even the money leaders are cash flow negative at the end of the year.

My wife's cousin has been on Tour several years, is a Tour winner, and has legit sponsorships from major companies. His equipment and sponsorship deals probably add up to like $2-3 million a year on top of his annual winnings which range between $1-3 million per year

things like travel expenses are picked up by his sponsors, so nothing out of pocket. Caddy fees are highly variable, some guys like Bones MacKay get paid something close to 10-15% of the winnings, but that's because he clubs Mickelson on every shot, reads every put etc, whereas other guys may negotiate a fixed fee per tourney with a percentage bonus based on winnings, or just a smaller percentage of winnings. Established pros will also cover travel and lodging expenses for caddies as well.

Top coaches usually charge a day rate of something around $8-12k per day plus travel expenses, so over a season you could easily rack up $100k plus in coaching expenses.

Not too sure about agents, it is a bit different in golf, I think most agents acts as "commercial agents" and only get a piece of endorsement deals they bring in, and don't get any cut of the winnings

that's not true at all, even top guys routinely play 18-25 events per year, not to mention all the training they do around the country at different courses, plus all of the sponsorship commitments they have.

Any top golfer is routinely spending 3 out of every 4 weeks away from home a month, and the "off season" is a measly 2 months that most golfers use to practice non-stop.

cr. anyone who thinks otherwise has no idea wtf goes into this.

it's the same thing with tennis. federer is playing a limited schedule this year in his old age, and he'll probably play 16 tourneys this year. he's training every single fucking day. you need to work your ass off to keep up your game at the highest level. in the nba, you could slack off and half-ass it and rely on pure talent.

1. I never said anything about not training...but they don't travel as much as you would think. Especially if you are at the top and can play less than 25 tournaments a year to keep your status.

2. Almost no one in the NBA can rely solely on talent. Most are working their ass off.

Just playing 20 tournaments a year is about a 140 day commitment. Even though the tournament is Th-Sun, all the golfers are there the Sun/Mon before for practice rounds and media events.

The other big thing for top golfers in sponsorship commitments. Traveling around the world playing in charity events, appearing at PR events, playing rounds with Bigwig CEOs and sponsor clients, product launches etc.

Explain to me how I watched Jim Furyk and Lee Westwood's TUESDAY practice round at this years Northern Trust? Not to mention that most European golfers like Westwood rent houses in CA for 2-3 months and live there full time during the Tour's West coast swing.

The vast majority of pro golfers, even the top ones like Woods and Mcilroy, arrive Monday, and play practice rounds Tuesday and Wednesday.

Did you happen to see them on Sunday or Monday? Because that would actually provide some support for your way off mark statement above.

Do some of the top pros play Tuesday practice rounds at average tour stops? of course. And the Northern Trust probably sees more of them play Tuesday rounds than other regular PGA tour stops due to the fact that it's played at riviera and is early in the season.

you have some cool stories and can say you've been a lot of places, but you're not having time to enjoy any of these cities. the day you lose, you're off to the next city to get ready, and you're not spending time hanging around fucking bitches.

you fly whatever you want; it's whatever you want to pay for. the bottom to mid tier of the top 100 are flying coach, unless they want to blow extra money for no reason.

how much time do these top 100 guys have at a big event like miami or aussie open to just frolic around the city, play at the beach, etc.?

the top players might have a couple days before, at most, but they're still busy during that time. but there's still a lot of media/sponsor shit they might have to do. and a lot of their frolicing around may be a photo op for their sponsors.

the shitty top 100 guys are generally playing the week before the big events in some other city b/c they need the money and ranking points, so they don't have the luxury of showing up too early.

unless they're total slackers, not really. most of them want to work as hard as possible because life sucks at that level. it's no like some top 30 guys who are comfortable being stagnant and don't have the drive to shoot for the top 10.

i have been saying this for years. and the women they marry are prefect. cheerful 9s from good backgrounds, tend to be educated, family-oriented, etc. They're jersey chasers of the most refined order.

this is prole as shit but I'd almost say NASCAR

PROS

girls are as hot as golf girls if not hotter

shorter season

risk of injury in crashes, but not extreme

shitton of money if you're a series regular

less age-related decline

CONS

around ARE CUNTRY hicks 24/7

totally beholden to sponsors (golf has this too but to a lesser extent)

success is very much out of your control

yes, absolutely

and don't kid yourself, not everybody is tiger woods, there are top 20ish doods who are not busting their ass in the gym like that, some doods will hit a few hundred balls a day, play 9, and that's it, which is pretty much a good saturday for a lot of rich folks

and, of all the sports other than football, travel is probably the best

it's like 8 weeks a year plus playoffs and I guess a few weeks at some camp, and it's only for like 3 days

presumably you only have to do it 8-10 times a year

i think for the Giants schedule this year they wouldn't need to take a flight from October 21st to December 8th; all games are either at home or in Philly or DC

i still think being a major league starting pitcher would be sweet.

sure the baseball season is long, but you have predictable on and off days--start a game every fifth day. work 6 days a month for 7 months of the year. and you control the game and face guys mano y mano.

if NL, you also get a free crack at hitting in the majors with no expectations.

you still have to travel with the team. and it's probably more boring being a SP playing every 5 days than DH'ing.

i know a guy on the senior tour and hung w/him when he played at charles schwab cup one year. it seems pretty 180.

you wake up from your hotel, get escorted to the course, eat your catered breakfast and chill and talk to other golfers or athletes who may come by. you go to the range or wherever to practice your stroke. play your rounds. eat your catered lunch. go back to the hotel or go visit a local club and play more, have a ballin dinner, fuck a hooker, go to bed, repeat for the weekend. and that's their fucking job.

fuck my life.

ofs, and even the washouts can land a job as a club pro somewhere, which I'm sure doesn't pay great at a lot of places but still has to be a pretty chill job

club pro jobs even at prestigious country clubs are pretty awful actually. you have to stand around kissing ass all day in long pants in the heat and when you do get to give lessons it's usually to old women who will bitch at you when they still suck. and the few jobs out there that pay 6 figures are incredibly hard to get, most pay less than schoolteachers. your colleagues also will be turds from PGM programs who can't break 80.
