You're a doc review monkey and get paid half as much. You also don't really gain any worthwhile legal skills or experience. Still better than unemployment though.

I see. Any way to transition out or into a normal position somewhere else based on this experience?

It's really tough because lawyers know that you are a second-class citizen. There are a few TTT exit options like "lit support", but that's really not much better than the staff attorney track.

You sometimes see these people go to state AGs office or something of that ilk. Obv the staff attorney experience isn't going to be a boost there. I have seen them go to doc review vendors but I think any pay raise is incremental there, maybe 90k to 100k.

at my firm, staff associates in litigation are "discovery specialists." that is, they have a lot of technical and operational expertise with document collection, litigation holds, etc. it's actually not a bad position to leverage into an in-house job if you want to because large companies are beginning to develop this kind of expertise in-house. that said, it's not really being a "lawyer."

There are a few firms where staff attorneys get to do stuff but it's mostly a doc review position.

I know a dood who went from a notorious shitlaw firm to a respected shitlaw firm to a staff attorney position in Biglaw. But after a few years, he got tired of the downsides mentioned above, and so he left the SA gig for an in-house job.

possible to go staff attorney to real BigLaw just by leaving off 'staff attorney' on resume?

maybe if u are (1) willing to convincingly lie your ass off to multiple people. they are going to ask you during interview what kind of shit you did at the firm. (2) pray to god they don't do any kind of due diligence. most firms websites will either not list staff attorney bios or prominently display that u are a staff attorney.

I know a guy who did this for like 7 years at a big firm. He was a master of avoiding work, and seemed to basically work 9-5:30. Then he landed an in-house job.

I am one of these at lower v100. They actually make associates out of the staff attorneys but I suspect it's not going to happen for me. The pay is good--45/hr + time and a half--but a recruiter told me that is absolute top of the market so there's really not much hope of ever doing much better. Unless I can becum a senior staff attorney I guess. The downsides mentioned above are all true and I know that I'm basically mortgaging my career for a few pay days now.
