Unlike many other drinks, however, iced tea can become harmful if left unrefrigerated. Bacteria can multiply quickly in warm tea, and scientists have found lethal amounts in a few instances. The most famous case involved President Zachary Taylor, who died after drinking warm tea on a hot day in 1850. Taylor's untimely death led mothers to warn their children about the dangers of unrefrigerated tea. Children learned quickly that the best way to avoid an early death was to pour warm tea down the drain.
