Starting salaries for beginning actuaries are 50-70k. To qualify, you just have to pass two tests, one on basic probability theory and one on finance.

After a few years of work and another test or two, you're easily clearing 100k. A decade of experience and you're making 200k. You can then move into an entrepreneurial or management role and make up to 300k/yr.

Oh, and your employer will let you study for tests on company time and pay for practice materials.

Many people on here probably are if they did something quantitative in undergrad.

more than two exams, and even the easiest exam (probability) is probably brutally curved thanks to super-study types.

"Personal experience: I took the first two of the SOA/ASA/CAS exams (which is, if you are in the United States, the same as what you called the Exam P-Probability and Exam FM-Financial Mathematics) when I was finishing high school and starting college. Compared to graduate school (in mathematics) qualifying exams, they are much, much easier. (Though I heard that the latter exams in the CAS or ASA requirement series get quite a bit harder.)

The probability exam, modulo some terminology/jargon issue, is actually not beyond the grasp of high-school level pre-calculus. You just need to have some experience dealing with probability and statistics. I think it is more of a test on problem solving skills than anything else.

The financial mathematics one has quite a bit more specialist knowledge involved. I remember having to spend several months studying for it just because there were many concepts which were new to me. At the time I managed to pass it by mentally associating the various words with the mathematical concepts/formulae they involved; in hindsight it was definitely the wrong way to study. Anyway, the study material from the SOA is actually quite comprehensive for the first two exams. If you spend a few months going through them you shouldn't have too much trouble."

"guys in my highschool pre-calc were familiar with integral transformations all the time...it was nbd"

this d00d's flame aside, yeah, actuarial exams aren't some herculean feat, but the quantitative skills required aren't anything to sneeze at; they're likely beyond a lot of people just because of the strong focus on calculus.

I don't think the P exam requires calc, but I haven't looked at it. Does it?

tbf, that dude now has a PhD in mathematics from Princeton.

i mean, i suppose it would be possible to pass the exam without having been taught calculus if you're some brilliant mathematical mind, but normal people will probably need to know how to integrate to be able to pass the exam as it does presume knowledge of calculus*.

shit, for all i know the exam could have been changed not too long ago. a guy with a princeton doctorate taking it in UG...that's like up to 8 years ago? maybe he's correct, but the exam changed.

wouldn't be surprising to see a professional certification become MORE intensive. accounting exams became a lot harder and now require a masters in accounting to even sit for the exam. gotta keep the labor pool shallow to keep the payout high, i suppose.

I don't know, it's possible he's just misremembering it.

And the calculus on the sample problems doesn't look too bad. Just a few simple integrals.

from what I've read, the competition for these jobs is much tougher than it was 10 years ago, pay has gotten worse, and worst of all, potential for growth to the positions that are actually good is SPS. Eventually the word got out that this was a job for smarts who are ridiculously risk averse and anti-entrepreneurial.

I looked into the tests, I got a 177 through super studying the LSAT, thought I might be able to do the same. Well, maybe I could, but fuck they were hard.
