Several thousand alone on scratch off. But his real addiction was the powerball/megamillions. He was almost 50, and I remember the day he called up my parents and told them that he had won nearly 60 million. This was about 35 million after the lump sum if I remember correctly. My dad even encouraged him to take the annual payout, because he didn't trust him not to blow it. He wouldn't, he assured them.
My Uncle moved to a McMansion on the Florida coast and fulfilled one of his weirdest childhood dreams. He had an unusual "dance" floor installed: it was made entirely of thick, reinforced glass. Below the glass he had, I'm not kidding, an aquarium put in. He filled it with fish, coral, and a real live shark. At 3-4 feet long, it wasn't a huge shark, but it ate all the fish within a week or two. The upkeep was really expensive, and to add to it, he decided (after it had been built) that he wanted the glass to "retract" so he could feed the shark himself and put in turtles and other sea creatures that have to come up for oxygen. This was really expensive. He did it anyway.
He'd have people over all the time to check out the "dance" floor, which he always called it even though no one danced on it and there wasn't even anything in the room to play music. So he'd just have parties and drink a lot and he and his guests would hang out on the retractable dance floor made of glass with a shark beneath.
During one of these parties, a reveler accidentally retracted the glass when people were still on it (he backed into the switch). Everyone freaked out and ran off. And everyone made it, everyone but a 5 year old year, African-American girl. My Uncle was not racist and often invited African-Americans to his parties and had many African-American friends. The shark immediately went for her and chomped her in half even though others tried to come to the rescue. The family sued my Uncle Alan for negligence, and he lost nearly everything after the jury returned its verdict after deliberating for nearly ten minutes.
On this day, my passion for the law developed. The jaws of life that snatched this young sweet girl (and the jaws of the shark) face us all. I am confident that the Tulane University College of Law will allow me to fulfill my burning passion to become a lawyer. Thank you for your consideration.
