I have personally witnessed two hangings in foreign countries. The long drop makes death relatively swift. Utah brought back the firing squad, but I believe this punishment should be confined to military offenses.

But shitlibs are not even content with death by nitrogen, the pussiest way to kill someone. Apparently rapist-murderers are only allowed to die of natural causes, presumably after being fellated for decades by taxpayers.

Shitlibs like to bring this up, even though they're the ones running up the bill for capital punishment by making a full-court legal press for every single death row inmate.

How is it not reasonable to just do spend less money and not kill anyone? As long as the convict is confined, he poses no danger to society.

As noted, Singapore doesn't spend much on death row inmates. In Singapore, death follows quickly upon failure of appeals. Van Tuong Nguyen was convicted of drug trafficking in March 2004. He was hanged in December 2005.

Criminal justice isn't a purely or even primarily money-saving enterprise, but I'll bet the Singaporean government would have spent more keeping Mr. Nguyen in prison for the rest of his natural life (he died aged 25).

Incapacitation isn't the only reason for punishing criminals. Retribution and deterrence are legitimate aims too.

Retribution as a reason certainly doesn't seem to justify collateral killing of innocents. You're talking about weighing some intangible emotional satisfaction against the risk of killing people. Deterrence is a better reason, but it seems unlikely that the sort of sociopath who would kill somebody would be deterred from doing so by the death penalty. These people often don't think they'll even get caught, or commit their crime in a fit of passion where reasoned judgment plays no role. This intuition seems to be backed up by quantitative evidence. It doesn't seem that states that have eliminated the death penalty in recent years (e.g., NJ and IL) have seen their crime trends diverge from national averages.

How much do Japan and Singapore spend on inmates? I'd like to see some numbers on that. It should give us an idea of the monetary savings we'd make from killing X extra innocent people.

Retribution isn't a "laughable" reason just because an autistic neckbeard says so. Human beings come with emotions as well as reasons. In a healthy society, the proper response to the rape and murder of your neighbor is outrage. Modern societies are affluent enough that people can wall themselves off from each other. "I don't need you" is the modern liberal mantra. Weakened social bonds reduce the normal empathetic response humans feel to victims of crime.

You also misunderstand the point of deterrence. It's not there to stop irrational sociopaths; it would be very difficult to construct any laws for that purpose (hint: irrational criminals ignore laws). Some people are incorrigible. They volunteer to make examples of themselves. The calculators take note of how the authorities respond and act accordingly.

Even in states that retain the death penalty, the byzantine legal maze makes application uncertain. Illinois only executed 12 people from 1977 until abolition (the last one in 1999). New Jersey didn't execute anyone from 1963 until abolition.

Japan and Singapore spend less on inmates than does the United States in per capita terms. See http://www.heuni.fi/material/attachments/heuni/papers/6KtlkZMtL/HEUNI_papers_20.pdf.

I've visited Changhi Prison. It is a severe place. A fairly accurate description from a whiny prison rights campaigner can be found here:

"Conditions of Singapore's prison:

Inmates are often kept in their cells 23 hours daily - inhumane

Inmates are forced to sleep on the hard floor - inhumane

Inmates convicted of minor crimes such as overstaying their work visa by 3 months or vandalism are caned by a thick wooden lash, resulting in blood and permanent scars - inhumane

Inmates are denied basic leisure activities daily such as watching tv and listening to radio - inhumane

Inmates are kept indoors for their entire sentence and are not allowed outdoors to exercise - inhumane

Inmates are not allowed zero personal possessions. Not even photographs of their families are allowed unless special permission is given. They only get 3 softcover books to read a month - inhumane

There are no fans in cells even though temperatures often reach 30-40 degrees celcius and humidity is extremely high. Inmates sweat profusely throughout the entire day - inhumane

Sick inmates in the prison hospital are forced to sleep on hard metal beds with their legs chained to the bed frame. they are given a lantrine to defacate into. - inhumane

Inmates who are suspected of having mental problems are placed in a cell where the lights are switched on for 24hours. This is deliberate sleep depravation. It only aggravates their problems further. The rationale for keeping the lights on is because the COs want to record their every move through the night. Even a monkey would know that you could use infra red night cameras for that! - inhumane."

http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=452116

Notice what isn't there: gang rapes, rampant drug use, riots, brawls, etc. Singaporean inmates don't have time to make more trouble, because they're working.

Japan is admittedly a weird case. Unlike Singapore, it's an ethnically homogeneous society. Crime is already low. There are very few death row inmates, but also extremely few capital murders. Appeals take about two decades, but costs are still lower because Japan isn't run by lawyers. It's also because death row is much more spartan than Japan's ordinary prisons. Inmates are held in solitary confinement. Exercise is permitted twice weekly. No television and only three books. When appeals are exhausted, death can come at a time the justice minister chooses (inmates are not told).

There have been some high-profile exonerations from the Japanese system, including the release of the world's longest-serving death row inmate. As I said, this risk comes with many other state policies. Unless you're a total pacifist, the regrettable execution of innocents isn't a very compelling argument.

None of these are appreciably more cruel. It's not like death by firing squad was so much more painful for the prisoner. It's just more gruesome for society so people wanted to get rid of it.

If you want to get rid of the death penalty, it might be better to make the executions more violent.

I witnessed one in Singapore and another in Iraq. Both by the long drop method (unlike Iran, where I've read they use a crane).

The Singapore execution was quiet. The prisoner looked dazed; his eyes stared out at a faraway point. Rumor has it the prison doctors offer a sedative to the condemned on the night before. About four or five guards marched the man into the execution chamber. The noose must be fitted behind the left ear to ensure the neck breaks cleanly. The prisoner said nothing the whole time. I remember him trying to hold back a cough as they adjusted the noose. The executioner slipped a white hood over the prisoner's face, but you could hear the condemned man clearing his throat. At 6 am precisely, the trapdoor opened, the coughing stopped, the rope snaked quickly and then stiffened.

I continue to support the death penalty, but I won't pretend this was an easy sight to watch.

The Iraq scene was much more chaotic. There was a crowd of witnesses, lots of Allahu Akhbar and other falafel phrases. The prisoner was shouting curses at the witnesses (they were all faggots and spies for Israel...basically a night on xoxo). The hangman was the only one in the room with any sense of decorum. He also took forty minutes to adjust the noose. They shoved the prisoner through the trapdoor.

In Iraq, I had a chance to view the body after the hanging (in Singapore, they ship it off to the relatives). The dead man smelled like shit; the sudden force evacuates the bowels. Most of it splattered on the floor, but the smell clings to the flesh for a long time. In this case, he also vomited postmortem; involuntary muscle spasms continue for hours after death.
