Big-state AG. HYS, fed app. clerk. Would be leaving 180k on the table in year 1 alone. Have about 75k in debt still.

Salary of 70ish.

i guess my thought is that i'd have a much better chance of going federal in 2-3 years if I did state gov. also that I don't want to waste my remaining youth/hair in biglaw hell. but it would also suck to stay poor.

It is bullshit that people go state ag>fed. People go biglaw>bigfed. Affirmative litigation in an attorney general shop is essentially follow what the FTC has done. Every call is "WELL, WHAT HAS THE FEDS DONE?" Why do you think that will enhance your resume?

I also figure that there are hordes of biglaw associates trying to escape. It's tough to get a AUSA job from private practice.

Absolutely yes. That's what I did. If you're interested in going AUSA, you will have the jury trial experience to do that. Plus, if you're interested in it, that tells me you would be bored with biglaw.

it's still a lot even at something like 5%, which is I'd say is a fairly conservative estimate for something like 20 years.

Yes. Apply for sections in your AG's office that litigate in federal court, even if its bullshit 1983 actions. You'll be handling your own caseload immediately and get real experience doing depos, hearings, negotiating settlements, etc.

I did state AG out of a TTT law school before ITE, when anyone who wanted a stage AG job got one. What you need to know about most state and city government jobs is that they are perpetually understaffed, and if you are competent you will get a lot of chances to do hands-on work that junior people probably wouldn't get to do in the private sector or even in the federal government.

On the other hand, the pay is very low. $60k was decent money in my midwestern state capital but I imagine it'd be worse in the northeast.

Great litigation experience.

But you'll never get AUSA from State AG.

Look at your local AUSA office. Ask how many of them came form AG's offices.

You'll find that the bulk came from BIGLAW or state DA's office.

That is true, but I wonder if that's also because most deputy AGs either (1) don't have fancy credentials or (2) enter public service after 6-7 years at a firm - when they're too senior to make more moves.

I assume USAOs hire from biglaw because of the signalling value and not the experience. But do I really need more credentials at this point?

cash is king

go with biglaw for a few years

your resume will get you interviews at some fed positions down the road

key is not to stay perpetually in biglaw but to get out after 2-4 years

I would use my school's LRAP, which is better. I'd still have to pay a nominal amount - probably about 4000 a year. But still, living on 70k in a major metro will not be easy.

State AG. AUSA loves trial experience above all else (though your clerkship is another important feather). With your credentials and a few years of trial experience you will be a super candidate.

You could definitely get it from biglaw (though I'd say less of a chance, relatively speaking). But biglaw is hell and may break you before you get AUSA. Plus you won't be cultivating the right skills. Just PAYE.

Do a couple years in biglaw and then bail.
