Conversations with parents I know lead me to believe the range is pretty great. I've known people to pay everything from an under the table $1000 per month with no expectation of benefits or vacation, to $10k per month for 30 hours per week (this was a prominent VC).
I pay $18 per hour for 45 hours per week with vacations and taxes, etc. But the nanny who watches my two kids meets some pretty stringent qualifications. She wouldn't be able to afford to watch just one kid for $10 an hour or so. When we had just one kid, we shared her with another family, one week at our house, next week at theirs, etc. Here's what you get for $18 an hour for two kids in Santa Clara:
- preschool teacher for two different, well known schools, either of which would be candidates for us - perfect driving record - shots, etc |

in total 9k upfront then it's like 194/wk for 45 hours with expectations of at least 2 weekends off/mo. I could be wrong on exact details. Obviously, they live with you and you feed them. That comes to under 20k/yr or nearly 1700/mo. At the end of the day, most childcare is in that ballpark anyways with set times/penalizing you for being late or not opening early. Au pair is the move. |

So all in all, we pay about $550 per month.
I also do the dependent care reimbursement which saves me about $1k per year. You also get another $1k or so in tax credits plus the extra exemption which is probably another $1k or so.
All in all, he's not costing us too much. Practically nothing when you consider we don't spend nearly what we used to on going out to bars, restaurants, etc.
We also have a babysitter we found on care.com that we pay $11 an hour for about once a month.
So it's not bad now but the impending child #2 is a bit of a financial worry.
Combined income is around $110k. |
