After replying to the shit comment below, I have to call bullshit here. I am a law student, and have a falconry license. Not that the former is relevant here. First. That is a red tailed hawk. Just a regular run of the mill hawk. It's usually the first bird you can have while an apprentice falconer. Second. There are no jesses or bells on that bird that I can see (from mobile at least). Raptors have jesses that allow the handler to re secure the bird. Although there are some people that use removable jesses, that is not something you would see in a hawk. Usually this is used for long winged birds. Third, a "trained" raptor is not like a dog. It won't bring you anything. It hunts because it is hungry. It hunts because the handler keeps it at "combat weight," a weight that drives the hawk to kill immediately. You must sleight of hand the bird off of the squirrel or rabbit (or other prey) with some other type of food. A fat or heavy bird will not follow the whistle or come back to you. A heavy bird off leash will just fly away. When a hawk drops on prey, it stays there eating it until the falconer recovers the animal (and usually dispatches the prey with an ice pick) and places it in a hidden pouch on their vest. Anyway, that's my take.
