it's a complete joke and any inhouse lawyer who takes himself seriously should be ridiculed, but it is a way to make a six fig income on a strict 40 hour a week schedule with less than 50% of those hours where youre actually expected to be productive

Uh that's totally wrong. Law firms get hired by in-house counsel and deliver the work product to the in-house lawyers. The in-house lawyers are the one who actually talk to the business execs and sway the decisions.

Four years of college + three years of law school + six figures in educational debt + 4 years in biglaw just to pay off the educational debt and get back to baseline.

All so that you can hopefully land an unglamorous middle management back office job working 50 hours per week reading the world's most boring documents for $140k per year. When you die you'll be forgotten.

And this is a GOOD outcome in law. Lol at law. Lol just fucking lol.

Agreed that vast majority of in house jobs are not worth it. You could've saved the 3 years tuition and years of paying back debt and toiling in big law and landed a generic corporate job at the same company making that same amount. This doesn't apply to $300k+ 9-5 in house jobs obviously.

I don't think you realize how many fucking random ass corporate jobs there are at huge companies you've never even heard of. I used to work a corporate job at Altria group before law school and it's amazing how they employ tons of people with just BAs who are complete idiots making low six figures. I currently deal with dozens of financial services providers and there is an entire industry of just back office work that employs hundreds of thousands of people, all making decent money doing bs work like AML compliance and credit risk checks, work that some people with JDs sometimes even beg to get when they've burned out. If you're the type to have gone to a decent law school, theoretically you could've done even better and than those idiots. The ladder hasn't been pulled up at all, you just have to know these jobs exists.

you're just wrong, or at the very least extremely ignorant/naive about IRL and post-ITE (which is still very real for anyone out of college after '08)

I agree people @ t14s could probably have landed a different path or job, maybe some that are even better in terms of $ and/or QOL, but I think your perception of corporate america is way off, and I base this off my own, more up-to-date perceptions, which involve a ton of people applying for jobs requiring 8-12 years of experience, almost all extremely competitive, requiring advanced degrees, almost none with any upward mobility, almost none paying close to what in-house people get

I also concede some people have shitty in-house jobs, but pound-for-pound, someone with 5 years from a biglaw firm can make more than 150K which is a totally hard ceiling for nearly all of these corporate jobs (and they dont hit it until year 20)

You're right, I'm talking about people in their mid-30s, but these people were impacted and laid off during ITE and had to work their way back up post-08/09, the same way lawyers were. I admit I have no idea wtf people in their 20s are doing, but I still believe law school to big law to in house is a weird path to strive for when you can just skip law school altogether and climb the corporate ladder. Your average in house lawyer at FedEx who is 35 or whatever is not making much more than their peer in middle management there so that begs the question why you even went to law school.

The compliance director type jobs are occupied by boomers and being eliminated as they retire. I look at say, the IT department and product development and while there are people who make what I make there, it is much harder to both get and keep. Most corporate jobs occupied by people our age pay far less than most in-house counsel jobs.

I am not talking about a compliance director job. I'm talking about people with the title of "senior credit analyst" and "relationship manager" and "FX execution associate" and "global markets product manager." These jobs are all easy as fuck and pay well. Any t14 grad could've started at 22 working their way up the chain or jumping around banks to get there by age 35. It's just that at 22, you don't know about a "junior credit analyst" job where you make $45k or whatever and you think you need an advanced degree instead and pursue traditional paths like law/banking/consulting/medicine, etc

I never said all those knuckleheads were all making $150-200k (though some of them are), but even assuming they all make $100-150k, I'm sure I would be doing better than them if I followed their same path and been in the $150-$200k bucket. it is really not hard at all. Law school to biglaw to in house is harder by far, in terms of opportunity cost and stress.

The metrics used to judge you in law school --> biglaw --> in-house are totally different than normal shit corp job --> lower management --> mid management.

I get it, you think you would always succeed no matter what but a) while I think you're talented I think your success is in the context of opportunities you've had to demonstrate your strengths, and b) even if I accepted this, that doesn't really apply to most T14/in-house lawyers.

agree most in house jobs sound really boring. and the ones that aren't are really stressful with people demanding immediate turn-around.

however, i've seen a few that seem to be pretty cool. They often involve negotiating long term strategic deals. Not necessarily M&A, but like strategic partnerships. Often these guys are not the GC but in a AGC transactional role and lead the charge and sometimes act like quasi-businessmen. And there are deadlines and late nights I'm sure, but it's more "businessman" kinds of demands, like you have to travel to Houston for the meetings. The actual drafting usually gets outsourced.
