my take is that millennials as a whole are not underemployed/underpaid. Rather, millennials have a whole are over-educated and have assumed they are entitled to a white collar, upper middle class lifestyle as a result. However, a big proportion of them are never going to be destined for anything better then blue collar or menial white collar, lower middle class work, and they are bitter about it and feel underemployed and underpaid. A bunch of boomers and Gen Xers also could do no better than lower middle class, but at least many of them had been taught to expect no better, so they are happy that their weekend entertainment is broadcast tv or sitting on the porch drinking miller lite.

The over-educated thing is probably true, but a generation of kids was fed a lie that you either had to go to college or you'd be permafucked. The idea that you have to go to college to do anything other blue collar work is still basically true because even menial white collar jobs can be super picky about who they hire due to automation and immigration.

Not saying they are entitled to be paid more, but the difference vs. boomers and Gen X is that they were saddled with huge student loan debts for worthless degrees, higher unemployment rates, skyrocketing housing costs, and zero real wage growth ever.

An entire generation raised to believe they were entitled to a better life than their parents grows up only to find that it won't be. Bitterness and resentment follows.

30 something millenials much different than 20 something.

The best cutoff line for millennials will be "could you vote in the 2016 election?" I.e. Born in 1998. Mainly because the way this Trump thing plays out stands a very good chance to make all the Obama era bitching completely irrelevant. But it's clearly true that 90s millennials are different in a lot of meaningful ways e.g. Never knew a time before the Internet, social media during puberty, completely-post Napster musical consciousness, etc.

Of course, but actually that's been true for the entire post-war era. The seniors in Dazed and Confused (I.e. The "Me generation" and first yuppies) were not boomers in any way that was similar to the kids in the streets at the 68 DNC. But they're alike in other important ways that distinguish them from Gen X. That's why the only reasonable discussion is what significant historical inflection points make sense as a basis to draw distinctions.

Older Gen X and young boomers didn't do this nearly as much as later gen X because cities in the late 70s-early 90s were totally fucked. Look at the murder rates per capita in east coast cities in the mid-late 80s its mind blowing. This also coincided with people postponing first child to late 20s. So really Rudy Giuliani is to blame for all of our problems.

It is almost as though the trend to avoid those things had more to do with a bad economy and delayed adulthood rather than a genuine change in preferences.

bad economy or no, prolonged schooling and pressures for both men and women to focus on careers above all else contributes to this.

Which accounts for delayed adulthood.

TBF they're all expecting to drive electric cars in the next 5-10 years and Obama EPA already made SUVs 2xas gas efficient. A lot of the SUV hating from the mid aughts is anachronistic now. Also a millennial parent to be will take one look at something like this:

And suddenly discover how much they really just want to find some new construction. They just LOVE those modern kitchens with the fancy countertops and backsplashes!

Map is dumb and misleading. It's based solely on home age and level of poverty. In NYC for example, there are strong rules about the disclosure and removal of lead-based paint. I'm not really worried about kids in Fifth Avenue pre-war co-ops getting lead poisoning and going buckwild.

American suburbs are complete trash now. Nothing like even 10-15 years ago. They are the slums of the future.
