Hasn't made a good movie since Saving Private Ryan if I'm not mistaken. AI was SPS, Bridge of Spies was tedious and dreadful, the last Indiana Jones was literal garbage. his earlier movies were infinitely better than his recent shit

agreed. so are a dozen other Spielberg movies. he used to be the gold standard. when a new Spielberg movie came out you'd go into the theater expecting a quality narrative with groundbreaking technical achievement and the perfect blend of commercial appeal with the visual artistry. now his movies are shit and no one gives a fuck

that's opening the door for a 200-post debate but I personally think Christopher Nolan comes the closest. Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu are up there. Dennis Villeneueve obviously shows a lot of promise too

Love Cuaron's work, but he's not nearly prolific enough.

Inarritu is more of an auteur--that's not really what Spielberg was ever about.

Nolan is probably as good of an analog as any, I guess.

agreed. in terms of making big scale, big spectacle. those are the ones trying at this point, inarritu with revenant specifically, but birdman was also audacious and ambitious despite the low budget, so that counts too. dennis obviously with his latest. cuaron with gravity. nolans been trying at epic for a while now. so ur right on the money about who is trying to take the baton.

Nolan keeps a good balance between actual art and riveting cinema, which was the original Spielberg formula. Villenueve might be reaching for the baton, but I don't think he's Jewish or repetitiv enough to fill the same slot.

Lynch should have scrapped the dune angle and made the movie anyways like Kubrick did with Napoleon to BL. Easily his greatest mistake.

But holy shit that would be 180

Kill yourself pumo. Minority report was the worst rape+abortion package deal adaptation of any of Dick's works, and that's after Blade Runner cut out 101% of the book's plot. And LJL @ 3 hours of strangely nordic-looking jews hunting down nazis and turrists being good cinema.

he hasnt made a masterpiece since saving private ryan. hes made a couple of good moveis since then, though. im thinking of munich, bridge of spies, catch me if you can was especially really good.

but he has done a bunch of crap, too. he gets nominated for best picture all the time, still, though, so i dunno if its out of respect or what, but war horse and lincoln werent really even good and they got nominated.

but yeah, sometimes directors will have a window where they shine brightest. sometimes they go out on top. speilberg is dimming.
