I like to go on vacations. I like to explore things and relax.

But now it's not about anything more than a mixture of status signaling, conspicuous consumption, and more and more I think a sense of Peter Pan-ism where people travel to avoid having a "boring 9-5 life," but they don't just do it. They brag. They talk, endlessly, about it. They go on a trip and come home planning the next one -- and that's actually after the one they've already got coming up. Their life revolves around it. When is the next travel. What credit card gets me the miles I can use to travel and how can I manipulate some system to eek out just a few more numerical units for travel. Where can I talk about travel. Who wants to hear about my travel. Do you travel?

There's something especially annoying about travel that I just can't put my finger on right now, but it didn't exist 10 years ago.

people travel to avoid having a "boring 9-5 life," but they don't just do it. They brag. They talk, endlessly, about it.

It is driven by social media stuff. People can't stand being left behind. They see a "friend" on instagram smiling with a drink in their hand in Rome and envy just wells up in them. This is biblical-type stuff -- the ten commandments warned us against coveting goods, etc. and now the internet makes it so much easier to do.

The other thing is doing good works. As a Catholic, I never really read the bible but I seem to remember a parable or something that Jesus told about two guys. Two doods: 1) good guy gives money to the poor or some shit but doesn't tell anyone; 2) bad guy gives money to the poor and makes sure everyone knows it. Unthinkable now. Doing good for the sake of doing good is crazy talk -- now you have to trumpet your good works all over the damn place and if you donate money to a building or something you better make damn sure they spell your name right over the entrance.

Any volume that speaks about restricting human behavior will seem sage (while anachronistic) in the modern era

It's deeper than millenials traveling to Paris to stick baguettes up their holds. I'm gonna post some thoughts on the topic I've been ruminating on for years now this week sometime, just gotta get them scribbled down

I'm not overcomplicating it. There is a deeper problem with how 99% of society views the entire concept of moving from one place to another, and I've believed this for many years.

Prior generations took a few trips a year too. Only difference now is that it's comparably cheaper to fly anywhere around the world so the old way of vacationing (resorts in the poconos and catskills, road trips, summer house) are less common. Prior generations probably took more vacation time, even if they never traveled all that far.

that's exactly the point. If people were discussing their travel plans and you discussed going to the catskills, people would respond "oh." Because it's not a fun vacation destination? No, because it's not appropriately braggable

What's changed is that the cost of travel has gone way down and it's now incredibly easy to plan a trip from your phone or computer. Cheap airfare and resort deals make once "exotic" vacations abroad really cheap and easy to book. It's the economics that are driving this. Which is why even old people travel further from home now than they used to (and boomers post plenty of travel photos if they know how to use facebook).

People talked incessantly about their vacations in the old days too. Old sitcoms would joke about the parents breaking out vacation photos and projectors to show off their vacation to annoyed guests. And yes, you would be the weirdo, cheap-o, or odd man out if you had the means and never vacationed, even back in the old days. They probably took more vacation days than we did. The economics of travel have changed, not so much the culture driving it.

You continue to miss the point. We aren’t discussing why travel is more common to overseas exotic locations.

And just because Boomers bragged about travel with photo albums in the past, doesn’t make it any less obnoxious how prevalent travel bragging is now on social media.

No, the OP's point is that he believes there has been a generational shift in the way people view travel. It's not generational at all. Travel abroad is cheaper and it's easier now to share your photos with everyone you know. The economics of travel have changed but xo ignores this because it prefers theories in which young millenial women are all that is wrong with the world.

narcissism and attention-whoring has 100000% increased and is a generational shift. and that narcissism and attention-whoring has bled over to travel.

you may argue that this generation is the product of it's surroundings, and that any generation would have fell victim to the same, but it's true nonetheless

I fucking hate this shit in my generation. I'm a child of expats and spent over a decade out of the US when I was a kid - made me fucking despise people talking about spending a week in some rando tourist trap and acting like it is some humongous Hemingway event. They don't even go and see the actual culture or history, they just hang out with the same random people who speak slightly differently or are a shade lighter or darker.

This travel shit online has gotten so bad in the past couple of years that it has been gradually pissing me off SO MUCH to the point that I almost want to drop everything and go on a massive year long Odyssey and cross the fucking GLOBE, hit 30+ countries and then make an IG and post all the pics with the heading "HERE IT IS U FUCKIN FAGGOTS - THE WORLD - I WENT AND SAW ALL, I DID THAT SHIT - SO DON'T SASS ME WITH YOUR LIB BULLSHIT AND GO FIND REAL HOBBIES NOT VACUOUS TOURISM"

I'm not bragging man - it sucked ass living overseas away from the US - which is the greatest country in the world.

I may not have explained myself in better detail here - The brand of "Travel Obsession" that irks me is what I see being dominant amongst the millenials and shrews, it's almost totally stripped the meaning from going anywhere because it all devolves into the same vacuuous generic photos on Facebook and Instagram.

When friends come back from these countries I ask them how the culture was, the museums, the sights, etc. But it always ends up with people behaving like hedonistic animals and coming back here acting like they have some merit badge that makes them worldly and cosmopolitan and THAT being the status star alone. It's just turned into an excuse to act like shit.

It's what they DO with that merit badge when they are back here that gets to me - especially with a lot of shrews who think that a jaunt to the hidden wine taverns of the Aegean suddenly makes you a culture inheritor of high Greek civilization. Traveling, just like the University Degree has been stripped and abstracted into a talismin of vanity and consumption.

It was a real shock to come back to the US though - feeling like a stranger in your own country and especially seeing it get worse and worse over the years. The place you spent 11 months a year waiting to come back to for a decade.

tbf the usage was humorous

you seem like a good bro

don't let you're generation & shrews bring you down

it's all a matter of meaning-making and for some those images and those insistences upon expertise and worldliness are filling in other voids/gaps left empty

Fuck man it's crazy. Growing up as the minority in a place and then coming back to the US and seeing the HS/College diversity stuff was insane. I couldn't understand the "racism" concept for a long time because I was always in the minority as an expat.

Then after being made to sit through CONSTANT indoctrination sessions by Fraudlies $chools back in the US and being told your racist starts to make you really fucking upset at the Fraudlie$ $ystem

the anti-travel shit has gone too far.

yes, instagram bragging is stupid in any capacity.

yes, you'd get a better feel for the authentic culture and history of a place if you stayed longer than GC currently allows.

but we all need a break and it is fun to explore new places.

this is a very low IQ form of negativity. obsessing about the bragging of others is a waste of time.

CR, we had a 180000 time in Medellin without spending a month going out into the hinterlands to bond with the natives.

that's actually the worst part of it. the diversity and globalism everywhere has actually made everything less diverse and interesting.

cr. the people whose "horizons are broadened" are the people who were utterly ignorant before leaving the us. anyone who is well read and knowledgeable about the world is not going to be shocked that the average costa rican doesn't have an iphone.

What if you have friends you want to visit who don't live in your town/city? Also worth going to see certain historical sites and nature

Yes I find it revolting. The worst part is that women can't just plan a trip and go spur of the moment, they instead need to spend 6 months obsessing over it and fantasizing about it. I HATE planning travel far in advanced. It is a source of stress.

During that memorable month I basked in the happiness of being for once in my life drifting with the tide of a great popular movement. Everybody was going to Europe—I, too, was going to Europe. Everybody was going to the famous Paris Exposition—I, too, was going to the Paris Exposition. The steamship lines were carrying Americans out of the various ports of the country at the rate of four or five thousand a week in the aggregate. If I met a dozen individuals during that month who were not going to Europe shortly, I have no distinct remembrance of it now.

I walked about the city a good deal with a young Mr. Blucher, who was booked for the excursion. He was confiding, good-natured, unsophisticated, companionable; but he was not a man to set the river on fire. He had the most extraordinary notions about this European exodus and came at last to consider the whole nation as packing up for emigration to France.
