why do people consider catholicism strange and exotic?

i was raised vaguely catholic by parents who were not at all serious about religion (we went to church very infrequently, sometimes not for years at a time). i did go to catholic school briefly, and i was 'confirmed.'
but it was all pretty ho hum. there was no kind of crazy occult aspect to any of it.
we just went to a boring church service, sang a couple hymns, listened to a bland and inoffensive sermon by an old man, went home.
i don't get why people think this is a crazy religion. yeah, there are crazy people who take the religion far afield, but there are crazy Episcopalian sects too.

Let me break it down for you:
- Body and blood of Christ. For Catholics, the bread and wine isn't symbolic, you're supposed to believe the priest is actually converting that each time they do the eucharist.
- Celibacy. Other religions, including Eastern Rite Catholics, think that is messed up and leads to rapey priests (it does).
- The obnoxious level of robes and adornments. Catholics are over the fucking top when it comes to all the attire and gilding. Other religions are far more chill in that regard.
- The rite of confession is seen as creepy.
- Catholics seem a bit obsessed with any of the sexual sins, particularly masturbation and birth control. The masturbation one in particular gets brought up fairly early (~middle school) and I think non-Catholics (rightly) see that as both entirely impractical as well as just plain screwed up to guilt kids over.
- Oh, the role of Mary and virgin birth; I think Catholics ratchet this one up a lot more than Protestants.
- Papal infallibility.
- A bit esoteric, but the notion of performing exorcisms and demonic possession; Catholics downplay that stuff but it's "in there" within the church and still believed/practiced.
I could go on, but those are the quick ones I know stand out as big Catholic red flags.

i love of all this. this is why being catholic is 180. but with that said...people totally misunderstand papal infallibility.
it literally does not mean what people think it does. it's been exercised, if i remember correctly, seven times in nearly 2000 years. people tend to not understand how the sensus populum/sensus fidelium/papal infallibility work together.
but that's a small note. being catholic is 180 million.

(guy who has never been in post-V2 parish)
Even in Rome herself, you'll see some cheap new altar with a childish felt cloth on it right in the middle of some 170 baroque excrescence, with a projector screen nearby so you can put up transparencies of shitty folk music.

some people think Catholicism is exotic because many ARE COUNTRY Protestants have basically folk-knowledge of Catholicism: they pray to saints and Mary, have weird rituals, go to confession, have monastics, etc.
of course if they went to a typical American Catholic parish and saw how relentlessly gay and bland everything is now, they'd just think it was excessively organized Presbyterianism.

there is a parish by me that has a late "last chance mass" at 7pm on sunday where i heard some INSANITY during the homilies and the prayers of the faithful
the straw that broke the camel's back---the week's readings were the 10 virgins. pastor said you want to be the foolish virgins who had nothing because--obviously--they gave everything away like you were supposed to. i sat there and looked at as many faces as i could. no one noticed.
i told my regular pastor at my TLM and he said "if you are in a predicament like that. just pray for the man and mail his bishop. but i would advise you to never go there again as it is a risk of scandal".

bully...it's the mass of the ages.
mine is full of old irish who weathered the storm and supported the church with their own money. when the diocese took their church from them, they bought a house and renovated it. they took their school from them. they built a classical school house. now it's them and their children and grandchildren and this hodgepodge of young families who will support it. there is this great video that kinda nails it down. this is our inheritance and it was stolen from us. but its here and it's waiting for you. this is it. this belongs to us.
