https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/16/technology/moviepass-economy-startups.html

Perhaps the buzziest money-loser of the year is MoviePass, which has upended the film industry by essentially giving away millions of free movie tickets. Until recently, MoviePass members could pay $9.95 for a monthly subscription that allowed them to watch up to one movie per day in theaters, with MoviePass paying the face value of the ticket on a preloaded debit card. Since the average cost of a movie ticket in the United States is around $9, going to just two movies per month resulted in a good deal for the customer, and a loss for the company. (MoviePass has started placing more restrictions on which films its customers can see, perhaps in an effort to trim costs.)

MoviePass’s business model — which Slate described as “creatively lighting money aflame in order to subsidize the movie-going habits of some 3 million customers” — has turbocharged its growth. And the company maintains that it can make money by striking revenue-sharing deals with theater chains, or charging movie studios to advertise inside its app.

I'm running at a rate of 5.2 MoviePass movies per month since January. If I keep it up, I could be responsible for something like $700 in charges to them by the end of the year.

Actually, seeing one movie per month makes it worth it in most places. It's $9.99 a month for MoviePass and evening ticket prices are usually in the $11-$14 range.

They've already started changing the terms of service. Now you can't see the same movie more than once, and I think nearly all members can't see more than 4 movies per month. Not sure if that last point applies to everyone or only new customers.

There's an app and a debit card. You (now) pay a monthly fee of about $10. Some theaters let you buy tickets and reserve seats directly from the app. For the other theaters, you physically show up at the theater, whip out your phone, "check in" on the app to the movie you want to see, and then swipe your MoviePass debit card, which pays the full ticket price.

There are some theaters where MoviePass doesn't work, but they are a small minority. You can see whatever movies you want, but you can't see a movie twice, and you can't see certain premium charge movies (3D, IMAX, Dolby Super Mega Rumbly Seats).

A supposedly random group of beta testers has to use the app to take a photo of the stub to prove ticket purchase. It's possible, for instance, to "check in," then use the debit card to buy a hamburger next door.

When I got the email putting me on photo duty, they said it was a test limited to a subset of users.

Unless you're a bumbling moron, you wouldn't have missed the post-purchase photo prompt. It's pretty clear.

Do you understand what a write-off is? It's hilarious when idiots throw this term around.

Edit: You must have been being sarcastic. But people post dumb shit like that on xo

It's amazing for AMC members because I get $5 in reward points by seeing a movie that I don't even see.

I use my moviepass and buy a ticket and get my Stubz points and then I just leave the theatre. No need to watch.

I walk past an AMC on the way to work so I do it once a day. Pretty much "seen" every movie so far and in NYC it's $20 per show. Pretty much running up $200 in tickets per month and I got in on the sweet $7.99 a month offer from a few months ago.

You can't see a movie multiple times, and I doubt your theater has 20+ unique movies per month.

I know math is hard but it's 10 unique movies a month * $20 per ticket = $200

That’s insane. I always assumed they had negotiated some kind of deal with theaters whereby they convinced them that it would be a net positive even if they were paying a small percentage of face value. This sounds like something that the worst business person in the world would think up.

LJL that France has had this system for years with no issues. I remember being a student in Paris and paying $30 per month to see as many movies as I wanted and then seeing 15 of them (but each time buying a soda or popcorn or something that obviously offset the discount on my ticket). LJL at fat pig Americans ardently trying to game the system to "make money" like they stuff their fat faces at buffets.

There is something about Irish/American/Jewish/Black/Latino culture that just fucking loses its mind when something is "unlimited." So prole. Take a cue from WASPS and Scandinavians for fuck's sake.

This post makes zero sense.

First you brag about seeing 15 movies a month using your subscription, then criticize Americans for trying to take advantage of their unlimited subscriptions?

Besides that, people only need to go to the movies 2 or 3 times a month for this to be a losing proposition for the company. That's hardly gaming the system.

You seem retarded.

In its annual report, filed last month, the independent auditor for Helios expressed “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue operating.

Shares in Helios have plummeted 93% since the end of January. Since May 7, they are down 68%, closing Wednesday at 68 cents.

LMFAO

MoviePass pays theaters full price for every movie ticket its members order, meaning that its core business is designed to operate at a loss. The company’s plan, executives have said, is to take advantage of a user base that has grown nearly 150-fold in nine months to sell advertisements and to persuade theaters to give them a cut of revenue.

Despite some successes, including email ads for the comedy remake “Overboard” and deals with small cinema chains, MoviePass lost $98.3 million on $48.6 million of revenue in the quarter ended March 31, Helios reported late Tuesday. In a regulatory filing last week, Helios, which generates more than 98% of its revenue from MoviePass, said it had only $15.5 million cash and $27.9 million of accounts receivable.

I thought their whole scheme was based on selling user data to studios? The MoviePass model, similar to Uber/Lyft and food delivery apps, is just VC subsidized leisure.
