Way way better at this point.

Not that it really matters. Cars are faster than people but people still compete in track.

the AlphaZero victory against Stockfish (admittedly using somewhat weird constraints, like no opening book for stockfish) was a bigger surprise to me and more alarming than AlphaGo defeating Sedol. Chess programming has been researched by many people for the last several decades and a simple learning architecture still managed to beat them. the games are also unlike anything else i have seen.

AlphaZero v. Stockfish was one of the most beautiful Chess matches I've ever seen. I highly recommend watching it on YouTube. Its intelligence and style of play is revolutionary and bucks hundreds of years of Chess theory.

This is hilarious. For decades, Go players bragged about how their game is the best because computers can't do well at it. Then a computer got really good at it in less than a year.

AI is unequivocally better at Chess. Magnus Carlsen or Fabi Caruana get fucking stomped by any engine.

AlphaMind dominates at Go too.

Any calculation-based game will become strictly dominated by computers, if it isn't already; there's just no way we can out-think every possible thread.

it's not even strictly about having superior calculation abilities. as i recall, the residual network DeepMind uses to generate a probability distribution over moves (which was then used to guide the tree search algorithm) was nearly better than Sedol's estimated ELO. so playing on intuition alone it can look at the board and few milliseconds later (with no searching) spit out a move roughly equivalent to what the best human player would come up with after trying out a bunch of possibilities.

Software engineering is definitely not safe. Neither is "data science" except at the highest levels. Medicine is safe just from a licensing and litigation standpoint

Lol fuck "AI" these matches are nothing more than cheap ad ploys by big tech so their R&D department can show some semblance of revenue. Do u really think McDonald's is holding back cashier robots bc of a $1.75 savings from min wage? State ur IQ

https://www.forbes.com/sites/edrensi/2018/07/11/mcdonalds-says-goodbye-cashiers-hello-kiosks/

mcdonalds beat earnings estimates earlier this year and the executives were just as surprised as wall st: turns out kiosks are better at upselling than human cashiers.

by 2020, there will be no more human cashiers at mcdonalds. that's not a prediction, that is the company's stated plan.

edit: out of touch boomers are concerned:

"My concern about this is personal. Without my opportunity to start as a grill man, I would have never ended up running one of largest fast food chains in the world. I started working at McDonald’s making the minimum wage of 85 cents an hour. I worked hard and earned a promotion to restaurant manager within just one year, then went on to hold almost every position available throughout the company, eventually rising to CEO of McDonalds USA."

Yes, it just can't do anything useful, like understand a voice or figure out verbal context that a goddamn retarded 6-year-old wouldn't miss.

Honestly it's fucking awing how much of an abject failure AI has been.
