Calvinist theology is the most rigorous/intellectually coherent group within Protestantism. Calvinism isn't a denomination so much as a set of principles and general outlook. You can be a Calvinist and consider yourself almost any of the evangelical Christian denominations.
Young, intelligent seminarians find the intellectual rigor appealing. It's also pretty insular (you can do nothing but read and reference other Calvinists in Calvinist circles if you wanted to) and portable. So you end with something that is spreading well beyond traditional "Calvinist denominations" like the explicitly Reformed ones.
There was a controversy among Southern Baptists a few years back because so many of their newer members were Calvinists. The old guard felt that they weren't being honest about their beliefs and were conducting a kind of Calvinist coup.

Yeah I'm sure everyone ITT is totally cool with LCMS's views on things like evolution and cohabitating before marriage
The play acting on this board is out of control, it's as bad as the hipsters who wear Carhart jackets

100x better than ELCA but if you're going catho-lyte, might as well go Catholic.
Also I echo the comments above - my grandparents' Missouri Synod church is a shrinking and aging little population. they are hanging on but I don't know for how long. :(

Went this morning (early to avoid the 11am crowd) it was a nice service.
I've been before as I was raised nominally Methodist and Lutheran but it had been a while. It's a bit more ceremonial at times than some other Protestant services but not too much. Sanctuary was nice, some of it has been there since the late 1800's.
Seemed like a nice community, lots of families with young kids. Most people seemed to know each other but there were a few stragglers and people by themselves.
Sat at the back, old guy came over to tell me they were serving pancakes after and I could meet everyone if I wanted.
Pastor was good, former military officer. I could see myself going back
