not really buying this--the graph says that americans drink only slightly less nowadays than they did in the 60s and 70s...NO...I would say that they drink far less now than then...back then there were bars everywhere...and now there are hardly any...people just socialize on the phone now...back then in the 60s and 70s it was not uncommon at all for men to drive while drinking a beer...the hit song In The Summertime from the 60s/70s included a line "have a drink, have a drive, go out and see what you can find."....people COMMONLY drank and drove back then...and the penalty for DUI was almost nothing...and you really had to be drunk to be arrested...

and then you have all the health and diet bullshit going on today...there was NONE of that in the 60s and 70s...

no, I don't believe this at all..

I recall a line written in a nicholas stix blog--he said that back in the day (he's a boomer) when he was young, HALF the adult males in his life were alcoholics...but that they still went out and worked every day...I would say that is about right..half the adult males in my life in the 60s and 70s were alcoholics...I almost never see anyone drunk these days...but back in the day, there were plenty of drunks around, at least in texas

Not really tho

“Prohibition was successful in reducing the amount of liquor consumed, cirrhosis death rates, admissions to state mental hospitals for alcoholic psychosis, arrests for public drunkenness, and rates of absenteeism.”

supposedly liquor was a scourge back in the 1800s and 1700s...but that is just the viewpoint of females and religious freaks...one reason i was an english lit major is because it really is a good view into the true history of humanity...the written word...that is the best view into history...but history, the written word, is perceived only through the eyes of the writer...the writer was commonly someone of the upper class ...often a female...what I am trying to say is that the viewpoint of the everyday male was not given in literature, history..etc...one might see the entire temperance movement as a cultural war on white working class males

even in the early 80s, people were still drinking it up...see for example the 1984 movie RECKLESS...the protagonist was johnny...a reckless, devil may care high school football player who rode his motorcycle with much derring-do...his father worked in the local steel mill...one day his father got so drunk at work that johnny had to leave school and pick him up at work and take him home...the conversation with the workers showed that it was not an uncommon occurrence for him to get drunk at work...nowadays that would be very uncommon

HOW people drink probably changed. the biggest change since the 60s in the economy are RENTS. higher rents put nice little bars out of business and make "going to a bar" not just another casual activity

an inflation adjusted beer in the 60s was like a dollar or two even in cities -- now it's several times that primarily because of rents. more people drinking at homes (were "pre games" a thing in the 60s? most of the drinking on a night out happens in the PG)

No, why would decriminalizing a drug and legalizing its sale to Americans by Americans and to witness the effects of it putting criminals and gangs out of business be relevant?

Admittedly have not read the study, but where is the data coming from? Self-reported data on booze is totally unreliable as people lie to themselves and even more so to others.

Nevertheless, once Prohibition became the law of the land, many citizens decided to obey it. Referendum results in the immediate post-Volstead period showed widespread support, and the Supreme Court quickly fended off challenges to the new law. Death rates from cirrhosis and alcoholism, alcoholic psychosis hospital admissions, and drunkenness arrests all declined steeply during the latter years of the 1910s, when both the cultural and the legal climate were increasingly inhospitable to drink, and in the early years after National Prohibition went into effect. They rose after that, but generally did not reach the peaks recorded during the period 1900 to 1915. After Repeal, when tax data permit better-founded consumption estimates than we have for the Prohibition Era, per capita annual consumption stood at 1.2 US gallons (4.5 liters), less than half the level of the pre-Prohibition period.32

Yeah it "worked", also it created the mafia and organized crime. It "worked" at great cost in other ways to society.

Although organized crime flourished under its sway, Prohibition was not responsible for its appearance, as organized crime’s post-Repeal persistence has demonstrated. Drinking habits underwent a drastic change during the Prohibition Era, and Prohibition’s flattening effect on per capita consumption continued long after Repeal, as did a substantial hard core of popular support for Prohibition’s return. Repeal itself became possible in 1933 primarily because of a radically altered economic context—the Great Depression. Nevertheless, the failure of National Prohibition continues to be cited without contradiction in debates over matters ranging from the proper scope of government action to specific issues such as control of other consciousness-altering drugs, smoking, and guns.

Wow, a huge crime syndicate that "flourished" under Prohibition to unprecedented levels, instead of vanishing after repeal, sought to continue its existence and income by branching out into different types of crime? Shocker!

Go back to Reddit with your data points.

I remember reading this forever ago. Drug laws, alcohol bans, etc. work insofar as they drive overall consumption down, but they create a huge number of negative externalities in the form of black markets, organized crime, etc. And inevitably, prisons get filled up with people related to that business that you banned. It often ends up a huge net negative on society and eventually the ban is either unenforced or is outright overturned. We saw that with alcohol, we're seeing that with weed and we're seeing that with prostitution as well.
