And while church and religion were designed to contain the horniness of dudes, the social change of the sixties was designed to undermine the church (blacks co-opting the language of Christianity, Jews and Catholics becoming “white,” Hugh Hefner has a TV show, “I wanna hold your hand” and “satisfaction,” space race/advent of commercial computing/advent of commercial air travel/Einstein/nuclear era = new era of worshipping science and technology). So the boomers entire identity was crafted around celebrating their sexual openness as liberation. They were like the straight people version of gays today who get married despite having no actual interest in maintaining a relationship that’s anything like a marriage yet they do it for the cause of gay rights.

What boomers have done to the millennial men in the workforce is an atrocity borne of resentment envy and irrational hatred, they made a Faustian bargain with the diversity and liberal establishment.
They sold a younger generation of men out in a desperate attempt to hold onto power for a little longer. Most boomers are functionally obsolete in Law and Finance and many other industries I am sure - the fact that they are so obsolete, so utterly useless, such a vessel of squanderment for resources is something they are keenly aware of and thus their only aim is to protect their entrenched position.
Once you realize that boomers do not have a goal of making money in the workforce, a lot becomes clear. They are not trying to innovate or make progress or open up opportunities because they are content to siphon out of the ossified corporate structure they created. They are trying to provide themselves with a fief and need serfs to do their bidding.

The boomers in the big 5 media conglomerates in the late 90s were faced with a disruptive technology that could completely re-order their industry and provide an avenue for content innovation that was seemingly infinite. Their reaction to this wasn't to try to compete and win to develop the best new products that could expand their share of the market and provide new and better options for creators and customers. It was to 1) sell out to another boomer in Silicon Valley and give him literally 1 out of every 3 dollars of every digital media file that was sold and hand him the opportunity to control the entire market with a truly SPS platform (iTunes), and 2) to form a conglomerated and jointly owned streaming service and make it as pointless and nonthreatening to the existing content outlets as possible, such that a start-up could come along 8-10 years later after floundering with DVDs by mail for a preposterously long time and drink their milkshake.
To me that's the archetypal reaction of boomers to digital innovation threats. They were more comfortable cowering and banding together to manage their own decline than they were trying to engage with the changes and performing the capitalist effort that would be necessary to win in the market and make the world richer as a result. Their fundamental logic is oligarchy and maximizing their control relative to competitive threats/maximizing their numbers advantage during their prime earning years. And that's a big reason why Tech developed as monopolies and duopolies to beat them at their own game. |
