Average car price is $40,000. Assuming like 5% interest, the average American is paying like $650/month for an average car, but will have to make that payment 72 times. LJL!!

I thought 5% was too high an estimate but Google says the 60 month average is 4.2... so 5 is probably right.

I do not understand how people make decisions like this.

Ah, yeah I agree that paying $40,000 for a car entirely on credit is rarely a good idea. But even a 5% loan makes technical sense, assuming the money could be put to a use generating 8+% returns.

I'm not disputing that lots of people make lots of bad decisions when it comes to buying cars. Just saying that a long-term car loan isn't necessarily a bad idea if you can afford the car in the first place.

We just bought a new 8-passenger vehicle for around $40,000 last year, and I think it would have been foolish to pay all cash up front in comparison to a monthly car payment that we hardly miss spread out over time.

buy new and keep for 10 years, rinse repeat. the floor for used cars is too damn high these days believe it or not. carmax, shift, carvana etc have pushed the floor up and there's too much access to information that just about everything sold private party used is priced competitively. very hard to find deals like you could in the 90s before the internet.

new cars also have some pretty cool tech and modern amenities. a car without bluetooth or side airbags seems really prole these days.

i would also stick to toyota and honda honestly. don't fuck with what works.
