A simple traffic court appearance for running a red light turned into a nightmare for one Clevland woman.
Janice Edwards appeared before Judge Zukowski in Cleveland Traffic Court on Tuesday to contest a $125 ticket issued for running a red light at the intersection of Division Avenue and 23rd Street. Ms. Edwards, originally from New York and a former assistant to Rudy Giuliani during his time as Mayor of the city, called on her former boss for a favor. Mr. Giuliani was quick to help and appeared on her behalf at the hearing.
The simple hearing -- typically no more than ten minutes long -- took a turn for the worst when Mr. Giuliani offered a unique defense: that Ms. Edwards only ran the red light because she was drunk and attempting to ram her ex-boyfriend's car, which she had spotted across the street.
Judge Zukowski wasted no time in sentencing Ms. Edwards to ten years in prison. According to Mr. Giuliani, his client has hired new counsel to appeal the sentence. |
