your argument is a slippery slope that can't be resolved. under your theory, a cop can shoot someone dead anytime they're scared or mad, period, and it's justified. this was the perfect test case - they knew he had no other weapon and they knew all he had was a taser. between the two cops there were still two revolvers and one taser (and probably pepper spray). and also the ability to let him run. he posed no threat to them while he was fleeing and posed no more threat to the community than anyone else in that town at that hour. unless your theory is that he's going to beat someone with a spent taser? |

I would make a terrible cop for a lot of reasons, but this seems to be an easy mistake to make. What was the time elapsed between when he got punched in the head and had to make this decision? 25 seconds? Been a cop for seven years about probably never got tested like this.
We can’t have unrealistic expectations of humans. These are not professional athletes. He should have let the guy run away. But it’s hard to have a perfect clear picture in your mind when you’ve just been punched in the head.
And yes, the guy shouldn’t have died, and it is tragic. But at some point you have to ask who was the least cost avoider here. You can’t fight cops. You can’t steal their taser. You can’t punch them. That message is what will actually save lives. And NO ONE is saying that anymore. All victims must be perfect, and no debate is permitted. |

Once he turned his back and ran away the threat ended and deadly force was not justified.
Don't complicate this with your racism. If you loved that man, you would be furious that those cops killed your father, brother, uncle, whatever, as he was running away.
