Currently have a 24 inch monitor with a laptop that I'm going to use for a staff person I'm hiring. I was originally considering getting a 27 inch or even a 31.5/32 inch but the consensus seems to be that 1080p will look like shit on a monitor that large so I'd need to upgrade to 1440 which is significantly more expensive (roughly 300 depending on screen size).
I can do 2 20 inch 1080p monitors with ultrathin bezels for 150.
Any reason I shouldn't just do the dual monitors with ultrathin bezels and save 150 bucks?
I'm a relatively new solo (1 year solo) about to hire my first person and so am looking to save as much as possible. Just got on a newer x1 Carbon as well so i can use my old laptop (older x1 carbon) for the staff person so I'd prefer to not spend another 300 on monitors.
EDIT: Edited to add this is more of a short term stopgap for a couple years. At some point I'll probably splurge on a 4k ultrawide but I'd prefer to hold off on spending any serious money until the firm is more profitable.

that's the best way to do it. I had hourly work from a firm while I started doing PI. Depends on practice areas but meet up with some guys doing whatever practice area you want to break into, not so much volume guys, but guys who handle larger cases, clients, etc. They likely have a number of stuff they turn down and if they could refer it to you and pick up a referral fee they'd probably way rather do that.
Obviously make sure everyone you know knows you're a lawyer and understands what you do. You can't just say I'm an employment lawyer or a PI lawyer, you gotta describe the process, and what you do. Most people are utterly retarded in understanding what a lawyer does, even something as simple as PI.
Other than that keep expenses super low, try to maintain a decent amount of money in your operating account as you start to make money to float you during slow times, all that kind of stuff.
I started out with a 300 dollar 4-5 yr old X-1 carbon off ebay that I wiped and re-installed all software on and it still runs great for office use. Pretty much the only thing i pay for is adobe pro dc because it includes adobe sign for like 12 bucks a month.

I got the majority of clients from other attorneys doing the method above I recommended. Going to the bigger firms and telling them I’d take the cases they didn’t want. Slowly started to get some referrals from friends and getting a number of referrals from Current and past clients which is how the whole thing grows.
I can do everything remote and while I have office space I get for free from the firm I was doing hourly work for, I primarily work from home.
I use adobe sign to sign up clients. Docusign and hello sign do the same thing but adobe is the most cost effective because you get full acrobat plus e-signing for the same monthly price as any other e-sign program
