We have different basic economic systems, to where blue states tend to have big multinational corporations and financial services, to where Red States tend to be much smaller businesses that service regional interests and manufacturing. Blue States like a model that focuses on encouraging extraordinarily high wages for a few, very high taxes, and generous social benefits (i.e. the CA model). Red States encourage small business, low taxes, and a very less involvement of state gov. in people's lives.
Blue State governments (and the Fed gov) are enormous and provide very high paying jobs, Red State governments are not well funded and small.
We have different religions, to where Red States tend to be Christian and Blue States are secular liberals. In that regard, our basic beliefs are completely different, with disagreements concerning what is gender, when does life begin, and what is murder. Blue State voters are terrified of the weather changing, Red States are terrified of social/family decay, and neither gives a shit about the other's concerns.
On race, we don't even have the same definition of civil rights or what it is to be racist. Red State people think that being racist is disliking someone for the color of their skin and civil rights means legal equality. Blue States think that being racist is to not acknowledge white guilt/ white sin and civil rights means the government passing laws that discriminate against others for the benefit of "historically oppressed" minorities.
Our music tastes split over geographical boundaries, as does our sports preferences. Red States tend to like college football and blue states like NBA and NFL.
We have no shared history, as Blue States are filled with recent immigrants and whites who take no pride in their western history. Red States claim to love "this country" and the US, but it seems unclear to me what "this country" is that they love so much? They love their region, but if your average bubba walked down a street in East Los Angeles or Southside Chicago I don't think they would be proud of much.
EDIT: on use of the military, Red State people need to be sold that the US military is necessary to "protect our freedom," where Blue State politicians are eager to use the US military to protect the interests of multinational corps (that also exist in blue states) and foreign interests like Israel. Blue State people seem to go back and forth on their feelings on the military depending on what their political leaders need, which is fascinating in itself, but Blue State people do not believe that the military exists for the purpose of "protecting our freedoms" or any other patriotic euphemism gets trotted out. Blue State people also serve at much lower rates than Red Staters, especially among whites.
In the past, there were reasons to stay together. During the civil war, there was a sense that this country was a great experiment in self governance and freedom and people really believed that the US failing would mean the return of the monarchy (or aristocracy). Nobody believes this now, if anything Blue State people believes that the US Constitution as written and traditional US culture is the greatest cause of tyranny and oppression that exists in the world today.
There were economic reasons to stay together in the past, for instance the cotton trade in the 1860's saw crops grown in the South and financers from the North profiting. Today, I think that Red States would be happy to rid themselves of the multi-national corporations and tech corps that dominate Blue States.
It does not seem to me that these visions are reconcilable. For Blue State economic and social visions to work, the core values of Red States cannot be allowed to exist. Red State Christianity seems like evil bigotry to Blue States, Blue State economic policies cannot thrive if companies and workers can flee to Red States.
Why can there not be a real conversation of a group of Red States leaving? What stops this? If the old Confederacy left the US, the remaining US states could have the political ability to usher in the progressive utopia sought after since FDR, who would stop them? Every LGBT+ person in West LA would be thrilled to no longer be countrymen with people who tailgate at NASCAR races?
Why is this not in everyone's best interest?

It could happen after a horrible civil war or the US being nuked in some idiotic war with China/Russia/Iran/NK or we can behave like intelligent people and divide the country up before it gets to that. Half the country hates the other half. We are no longer at the point of "we have our differences but we're all Americans." As OP states - there's nothing uniting us. They should be able to have their green new deal, open borders, socialism, etc. And we should be able to have free speech, guns, capitalism, low taxes, etc.
The problem is that it will take a number of states breaking off before this actually happens. |
