JWs recognize that Xmas came from the Roman saturnalia (winter solstice more or less) and thus has pagan roots. Nothing in scripture indicates JC was born in December, in fact to the contrary the fact that shepherds were sleeping outside with their flocks when the angel appeared announcing JC’s birth indicates it wasn’t winter bc it’s cold in Israel in December.

So they don't have an issue with JC's actual birth then, just an issue with the date. Seems like an arbitrary thing to fuss about.

Do they believe JC is the son of God (Jehovah)?

They don’t celebrate birthdays at all because they believe such celebrations are of pagan origin. That’s a recurring theme for JWs. Mixing Christianity and paganism is a big no-no.

They do believe JC is son of God, but not part of a trinity.

Yes. They believe 144,000 will rule as “kings and priests” in heaven with JC, and there will be a resurrection to earth of “the righteous and unrighteous” where they’ll be ruled by JC and the 144k and the earth will be a paradise like the garden of Eden. There’s obv more detail, but that’s the high level.

The big pitch is living forever in eternal youth on a paradise earth. Very few modern day JWs consider themselves part of the 144k. Maybe like 1 out of 1,000 current JWs. The rest have the “earthly hope.”

So I guess that’s a key difference between JW-ism and mainstream Christianity. Mainstream Christians want to go to heaven. Most JWs want to live forever on paradise earth.

I’m not familiar with JWs using that phrase, but if they do, yes whenever they refer to “paradise” they are referring to earth. And more precisely, post-Armageddon earth which is restored to edenic perfection, lions laying down with lambs (literally), and righteous humans living forever in eternal youth.

only the uber special (them) are saved

Christianity lost its way until the 19th century (them), don’t think they believe in any kind of continuity with church through time

yhwh is literally pronounced “Jehovah” (misunderstanding the vowel markers the masoretic text added to remind the reader to say “adonai”/lord when reading the divine name) and for some reason we have to say Jehovah a lot

a joke.

A general heuristic for people: If no early church fathers wrote or support key tenets of your beliefs, and in fact often say things completely to the contrary, your interpretation is likely horseshit.

The non-existence of hell, for example. Another would be the denial of an immortal soul. Those core JW beliefs run completely contrary to the corpus of early church documents, letters and pronouncements.

Sometimes it dies along with the person. I'm hardly a JW expert so the nuances about when they think it does die and when it does not is something i am ignorant about. What I do know is that they believe in some instances that the soul dies with the person which is simply wrong.

I would add something else to that heuristic: If you have to start changing words and shit in the bible to match you beliefs in contrast to what has been circulating for over a thousand years. This would apply to Luther as well.

I'm friends with one who left it in his teens but then rediscovered in mid 20s

Basically it's all about the Bible.

The belief that we are in "end times"

The only way to be one of the 126,000 who get to heaven is to live a "good" life, do regular bible-study, and go door-to-door once a week. They don't really speak about the 126,000 thing openly, though.

There are no special days (birthdays, holidays, etc)

Some will drink in moderation, dance, party and have fun. But there is no pre-martial sex. Swear words kept to a minimum.
