The last of my contemporaries who were naturally healthy looking have pretty much fallen by the wayside at this point and started to show the signs of aging and creeping decline. I still have friends who look like I remember them always looking. But these are guys with elaborate diet and workout routines. The guys who didn't proactively take control of their health are sliding downhill now.

No, Trump is right on this one. People who work out long-term usually get back, shoulder and knee injuries that cripple them.

This is Trump and Ann Coulter’s philosophy (“You only get a certain # of heartbeats”). I think there’s some validity to it (in that working out excessively over a long period of time wears on the body) but if you’re not moving around and using your body actively every day, you’re going to get a whole host of other issues that are arguably way worse than the consequences of excessively what long term exercise. Moderation.

But moving around in general is easy. Walking 5 miles to work or playing a round of golf gets the proper amount of mobility. But u will still be fat like trump. U stay skinny if u actually run 5 miles or otherwise do real exercise. And that's actually unhealthy longterm. A lot of those runners have worse knees and hips than trump. And if they got a predispisition to high blood pressure exercise only makes it worse.

Yeah, by “moving around and use your body actively” I meant regular exercise including cardio, like the kind you describe. Not just taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work.

Well I intentionally walk about 6-8 miles most days(mostly for work) this year and I am getting fat. Running(at a good pace) even 3 miles is exercise. It is that muscle soreness that is lacking when u merely walk. Same if I move to florida and go float in the ocean everyday it's not the same as lap swimming...

Yeah I dont know how are my knees. Never had mri. Only did an xray after a small fx. But I've seen runners come in at 60 or even 80 with "i just did my usual run and suddenly have this terrible pain and cannot walk did I tear a menisc?" - no you probably tore your menisc 50 years ago, u have absolutely no joint.

It depends on how you work out. You can avoid those injuries by not being retarded, deadlifting near your max, not stretching/warming up, etc.

Also, resistance training is generally associated with increased longevity.

You won't think that at the end of your life. Also, it's about a lot more than five years of life. It's about possibly decades of vitality.

40 year old guys of today look like old men. I can only imagine how they'll look in coming years. Do you really want to be elderly at 50?

Idk, I eat pretty badly (random restaurants for lunch and dinner, though I try to get in a salad), pretty inactive, but somehow people who I haven't seen tell me I look like I've been working out. All I did was gain weight though. Guess it's a perk being somewhat of a mesomorph.

Still can randomly walk into a gym and deadlift almost 1.5x my weight and power clean about 155 despite being untrained for a couple years in my late 30s. But yes, need to get back to lifting soon.

I did train like it was a job from 16 to 20, and seems I just maintain a level of readiness and fitness without trying.

15 years out of college and i have classmates who have completely blown up and become fat suburban dads, and i have colleages who look about like they were in college, with a bit less hair.

just like careers, there are big differences that are non-linear. that kid who went Ib --> PE is now a multimilionare, while the generic kids are in 100k middle management.

keep working out, lifting brothers.

there is something about letting oneself go that ends up closing your circle a ton whether they know it or not. maybe it's simply lack of energy after work to do something, or maybe shame, etc. but it's noticeable af.

5+ day water fasting rejuvenates you to an incredible degree. In my experience with it, about the only thing it doesn’t help with is hair loss.

Also, metformin.

I'm planning on hopping on that metformin soon... as for water fasts, do I need to build up to five days or can I just do it, also do i have to slowly introduce solid foods after the fast?

Just do it, no build up needed. First two days are the hard part anyway.

I eat normally after fasting but some people recommend a high fiber vegetable diet for the first day after to ease GI issues from “restarting” the GI tract.

If you do metformin, time it to minimize the amount in your system when you’re exercising, because it blocks some of the benefit. I workout at night, then eat and take 2000mg extended release metformin with dinner. By the time the following day’s workout rolls around, plasma level of it is pretty low.

This type of vain thinking is such a gay americAn phenomenon indicative of a diseased culture and mindset in our people. The French rarely exercise, eat dessert daily, and live longer than us. Then walking everywhere doesn’t fully explain it either. “Vitality” is about so much more than your physical form.

i wonder how much more sedentary and stressful our lives are compared.

fitness has so many knock off effects that it's hard to list them in one shot. eating/sleeping/working out. gotta be done to have good qol. my granddads were both farmers and one died in his 90s and the other at 105 and basically they both had just one shitty year health wise. they ate real food and were in the sun working pretty much until their 80s. and even after that they both kinda casually worked if it wasn't raising horses, it was growing some tobacco or something basically for fun.

Bread in Europe is different. Europeans only consume fresh bread, they throw it away much quicker.

American bread is prepared with some sort of preservatives.

Once you start only consuming fresh, higher quality bread you can notice the difference. Think of it like the Japanese with rice.

tbh, it's 95% staying thin and having hair. being actually 'fit' is optional.

if you stay thin, and maintain your hair, you will look recognizably like you did in your 20s, just older.

the unrecognizable trainwrecks are always obese or bald or both.

It's really that simple. A ripped 6 pack guy could have an identical twin with 14% body fat with a similar amount of muscle, and have no advantage over him as they will look exactly the same in regular clothes. Only fags micromanage their diet and fitness to get super ripped. Just need to eat ok and do some occasional workouts so you don't let yourself go completely, and you're fine.

this strategy stops working at around 40 for many people. you also ignore the cumulative stressors of kids, increasing professional obligations, other symptoms of middle age and living for others. all that accrues to ‘increasingly more out of shape every year’ even though you’re also not nosediving into physical ruin. by 50, many dudes will be completely fucked if they carry on as you advise. you sound like you’re just pitching what you believe works for you.

i don't think so.

like, look at a Mitt Romney, for example. he has looked 'good for his age' in every decade of his life simply by not being fat and having decent hair. he maintained his age-adjusted attractiveness from his 20s through his 70s.

that's all you need. i doubt Mitt Romney is doing 1000 crunches and eating some insane diet every day, but he probably looks 10x better than some Boomer tryhard on HGH w/ sci-fi looking 'abs' at age 66.

this is dumb.

my point is that being a) thin and b) having hair is 95% of the battle.

Romney probably eats 'sensibly' and walks 20 minutes a day. if that's all you meant by 'fitness,' fine. but if you think he's doing 'elaborate workouts and diets' per OP, that he is into P90X routines, keto, and has washboard abs under his shirt, he doesn't. it's within everyone's power to have Romney's BF% without a massive commitment to 'fitness.' just don't overeat.

takeaway: be relatively thin, have hair. anything beyond this is optional.

most people cannot stay ‘relatively’ thin and look fit as hey move through middle age if they put in zero effort. it’s fine if you have good genes and eat a good diet, so that knocks out a giant fraction of people. it’s also a false dichotomy where he’s saying the alternatives are either ridiculous diets and gym rat behavior or ‘just walk 20 minutes a day and don’t go bald.’

if you budget time every week for something where the primary benefit to you is maintained or increased fitness, and you consistently prioritize getting some amount of beneficial physical activity that you enjoy on a majority of days in the month, you’re already top 20% of the population no matter what you engage in. ‘dedication’ in this context would be varying upticks in attention to goals, training with focus, actively trying to improve at a sport or your times, etc.

anything beyond and you’re probably mentally ill to some degree unless you’re being paid.
