I have a few 100+ year old paintings inherited from family (one is a priest painting that is probably over 200 years old, we are not sure, another is an 1899 painting of some badass old black dude that an ancestor of mine painted, to name a few).

I'm not trying to buy a Picasso. But where can I get really badass old oil paintings that aren't really expensive? I'm talking a few hundred bucks even.

This is an actual (shitty) scribble by Picasso. Picasso was much more prolific than people realize; he was constantly scribbling shit out for people, signing napkins, doing 30 second drawings on notepads and sheets. The public has this impression that "great artist" = "few works" and for some artists that's true but Picasso isn't one of them.

Picasso was notorious for having like 100 intern slaves who contributed to many of his works especially as he got older. There's a very complicated art history that gets studied here. Sometimes they'd just start the work and then he'd take over; at other points they were basically functioning as a creative assembly line with Pablo just adding a few finishing touches.

Read “The Goldfinch”. Lawsuits settle, and dealers have ways of protecting themselves. It’s a neat niche to get into. Lawsuits often end up “no harm no foul” quiet reimbursements.

But they had chain of title and independent verification and all their assurances were quitclaimed. And they didn’t know it was fake when they sold it. And they invited you to do your own investigation before buying. How can they know other than to confirm and represent the bonafides as presented to them. Also the art gets cache simply by being owned by famous collectors, if only for a little while.

“Whoops, sorry, I’ll quietly give you your money back,” is how these things go whenever they are called out on a fake. And that only happens some 5 percent of the time.

I don’t know what the term is. Really all I know is that dealers have ways of covering their asses, and when it gets bad and they’ve screwed up they just quietly reimburse the money. We are all art lovers here.

Same thing happens w antiques. It’s a fun business to get into.

rate some of my current top pieces (some of my others are in storage right now when I moved to a smaller place)

https://imgur.com/Zq1N9B2 - my pride and joy. Really really old, frame is even super old. Inscription on the bottom says it used to be owned by Richard E Berlin, former long time CEO of Hurst Foundation

https://imgur.com/M6vW3uR - 1899 painting done by one of my ancestors. No clue who he was

https://imgur.com/iuQtrDj - another old one that we have no idea what it is

https://imgur.com/mPcftuP - drawing by Benny Goodman (the jazz artist) of him and my grandmother hanging out, they used to date

also have a framed autograph of King George III

When you buy old European paintings look at the back for seals or auction numbers and also to see if it’s painted on board or on canvas. If you can see the piece in person some dealers say you should smell it because new paint will have a distinct odor.

Hotel furniture liquidators.

My mother took me to one of these and it was nonsense. All these hotel and real estate staging dining/bedroom/living room sets plus paintings/prints for low prices.

Just about any quality museum or art gallery if you have the right tools.

1st dibs is probably the worst place in terms of cost. Everything is 3-5x what you would pay for it at auction. Pro antic is a similar French option, that tends to be similarly overpriced. Direct at auction from a reputable house is best from a cost perspective. US auction houses will typically list on one or both of Invaluable and liveauctioneers, except Sotheby’s and Christie’s I think run exclusively on their own platform (and cater to higher end stuff). Invaluable and liveauctioneers will also have European auctions, although some smaller French/euro houses are only on drouot or interencheres.

1st dibs is good in terms of identifying artists or styles you like, and some of the sellers are professional galleries so the selection is more curated. Other sellers are basically just flipping auction buys and cross listing on 1st dibs, ebay Buy Now, etc.

What’s the best way to get information about paintings that you own. Find a local art appraiser? How much do those cost?

And thank you

Not sure. Both galleries and Auction Houses provide appraisal services I think, don't know the cost.

If looking on your own, probably google is the place to start. Is there a legible signature on the front or back?

If you like the one by your relative, search for "orientalist" paintings. A lot of late 1800s-early 1900s paintings of the ME (street scenes, portraits, seascapes etc.) by european painters.

You should be able to ship within the US for less than $100, so I wouldn't limit it to your city. Off the top of my head, some of the one that seem to have good art listings (outside of Sotheby's, Christie's):

Bonham's (International, but has US auctions)

Doyle (NYC)

Heritage (Dallas)

Freeman's (Philly)

Leland Little (NC)

Hindman (Chicago)

Toomey (Chicago)

Clars (Oakland)

Clarke (Outside NYC)

Litchfield (CT)

Internationally:

Artcurial, Osenat, Tajan, Ader, Millon, Cornette St Cyr (France)

Bonham's, Cheffins, Chiswick, Roseberys (UK)

Vanderkindere (Belgium), Dobiaschofsky (Swiss), Koller (Swiss)
