Nigeria's first multi-story structure opened in 1978 but collapsed only days later, killing 53 people.[2] Outside investigators discovered that columns had been filled with straw instead of reinforced concrete, and that wooden toothpicks were used to support a balcony.[3] Duct tape and thumbtacks were used to keep a metal roof in place.
