Outrage filled the halls of the California capitol Tuesday as legislators discovered they had inadvertently passed a slaveholder compensation bill by a voice vote. The bill, which has been denounced as racist, was approved by both chambers and quickly signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who later claimed he didn't read the legislation.
"Guys, can we, um, reconsider the motion? This is just not okay," said Rep. Cheryl Wong-Goldberg (D-Westwood). "In like, so many ways," she added.
Measures to overturn the new law were quickly organized, but experts said it could take weeks or months to strike the measure from the California code.
"It ain't right, it ain't right," said a visibly upset Black man outside the capitol.
