A scribe would have two tables of figures and would perform the corresponding calculations in another table, like matrices. Also they would use notched pieces of paper to select something from a set that had certain characteristics and not others.

There were filing systems which were truly amazing in scale (the British especially) where someone would look in a “card catalog” and then march into a warehouse and pull whatever you needed. Things could be filed under multiple key words so sometimes things would be impossible to find or get lost or, you know, the warehouse would burn down. |

Typing pools wee a thing. A room or series of huge rooms full of women on typewriters. The clacking and clanging got so loud people needed ear plugs.
There were always jobs because this process was so labor-intensive and there was minimal competition for jobs because it just wasn't possible to find out about jobs in a certain area unless you physically went there. Want ads cost money and were only a small part of the picture. |

Newspaper and TV were the main entertainment. My dad would read several newspapers at his office each day.
Boredom wasn't really that bad. What I don't miss is the lack of information. It was almost impossible to find out about anything that are a couple clicks away today. |
