Anyone here with genital herpes? Login w/diff. account

The doctor was sure it was just folliculitis but did a culture any way and turns out I got lucky (sarcasm.) I've been on Valtrex for a week and so the symptoms have gone away, but I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice or thoughts on how to deal with it. Should I take Valtrex forever? Secondly, it's true that a lot of people have it, girls more than guys. 1 in 4 for girls, 1 in 5 for guys, I believe. However, like 80-90% of people who have it never show any symptoms or the symptoms are so mild they never know they have it. It doesn't really affect their lives in any meaningful way. After all, if you don't show the symptoms, it can't hurt that much. That being said, it's been said that herpes kills brain cells slowly over time. There's a link on the front page of yahoo I think talking about viruses that kill brain cells. If you're one of the poor pathetic bastards that actually contract it and show symptoms, that's kinda sad. YOu'll have like 4 outbreaks a year if you're the average person, some only have one ever, some have it 3 weeks a month. It's pretty much permanent but they may come out with therapeutic vaccines in the future but that's hard to do. NONE currently exist though they're in phase II and phase III trials for therapeutic vaccines for HPV. In 2008 they're coming out with a preventive vaccine for herpes, which indicates they may be getting better with vaccines but like i said, therapeutic ones are still way into the future and even the preventive vaccines are only good if you've never had HSV-1, cold sores, which 80% of people have. Don't kid yourself about not likely to spread it to someone else. Yes valtrex will make it less likely to spread but there's still a good chance if you have sex with someone more than 3 times that they'll get it. Which means anyone who's ever in a relationship with you is pretty much guaranteed to get it. This may not be so bad because almost everyone has/had an std at one point. 80% of women by age 50 have had HPV according to the Center for Disease Control. THe reason there's a stigma is mostly because most people simply don't show the symptoms. Though it's most likely permanent, it may not be definitive. Recent research has shown that HPV is most likely transient and eradicated by the body's own immune system. Perhaps one day a therapeutic vaccine will be able to cure herpes. But the real harm of having herpes is the psychological toll it takes on you. They're pretty much like itchy pimples. If you get pimples on your dick, you wouldn't really be ashamed at all because it isn't transmitted sexually. However, the effect is almost the same minus the itching. Perhaps a better parallel would be genital warts and genital pimples, since most care about the former and few would worry about the latter. In both cases, they're benign and go away on their own. It's the stigma that people don't like. Most people follow the policy of not telling a one night stand, maybe telling a fuck buddy, and telling a potential long-term gf as soon as reasonable. This is somewhat reasonable. In this day and age however, people should and usually do take on the responsibility that comes with fucking (except whores who abort) and understand that anyone you fuck might possibly have something. As long as you don't lie about it if you're asked straight up, a sin of omission would suck but a lot of people probably wouldn't fault you if you do it within a reasonable amount of time. SOmeone who doesn't simply doesn't understand how prevalent STD's are, is some dumb bitch who doesn't think it'll happen to her, or is just a bitch looking for someone to blame, which is also rational. It's going to be a burden, but it doesn't have to be life-changing if you don't let it. The biggest hurdle is to get over the psychological stigma. The second is to figure out a game plan for who and when you tell. The third is to blame your shitty immune system for being part of the 10-20% of people who have it and show symptoms. Live a healthier lifestyle and maybe your symptoms will show up less.
