It’s really sad. The spread in the class is huge. There’s a clear top and a clear bottom and actually a pretty small middle. The teacher’s one focus is to get the bottom to pass the state tests—even uses the top kids to tutor them, which is so weird to me. Teacher told my kid that she didn’t have to turn in homework (along with the rest of the top kids)—like wtf? I was in an uphill battle all year to try to teach good study habits.
We’re likely going to go private for middle school and get on that treadmill. Really hate to do it because we moved where we did for the “very good” (but not elite / super-Asian) schools. Can walk to both the elementary and middle schools from our house. Private is also so expensive. We can do it but it’s going to require some planning.
I think it has gotten much worse than when we were kids and in large part because the bottom of the class is growing (in addition to everyone involved’s overall laziness and caring less).

Asking the top kids to tutor, that's crazy.
Yeah, laziness, caring less, and overworked professional parents in these districts without a lot of free time to tutor. Kumon is big business these days.
Careful with private schools, more reputable and more expensive is not always better. Some of those are full of shitlibs. Our tuition is $20k per kid, which is a lot, but probably below average by private school standards. But the kids love it, there are no screens, small class sizes of 15 kids, I can't really complain for elementary school. When the stakes are higher we'll reassess again.
