just lol at our public education, they go to school to get indoctrinated with woke bullshit (including woke ways of learning math) then have to supplement with actual rote chinese-style learning outside of school. what a gay country

Can confirm. Have to if the parents actually want them to learn anything. Boomers and younger libs are still under the delusion that the bottom half (and increasing) of the class has any chance in hell of ever grasping the material.

Depressing. My kids are in private school, but have plenty of friends whose kids are not. Seems like homework is an optional concept now, and even more than when we were kids, attention is given to the morons more than the smart kids that are there to learn. They are also given screens very early on it seems -- my nephew (age 9) said his friends have figured out ways to play games while the teacher is not looking. And I asked him to show me what they learn on these screens and it seems like there's platforms/software for each subject. Not only is this confusing but how on earth is there any accountability? Are teachers even reviewing this work?

It’s really sad. The spread in the class is huge. There’s a clear top and a clear bottom and actually a pretty small middle. The teacher’s one focus is to get the bottom to pass the state tests—even uses the top kids to tutor them, which is so weird to me. Teacher told my kid that she didn’t have to turn in homework (along with the rest of the top kids)—like wtf? I was in an uphill battle all year to try to teach good study habits.

We’re likely going to go private for middle school and get on that treadmill. Really hate to do it because we moved where we did for the “very good” (but not elite / super-Asian) schools. Can walk to both the elementary and middle schools from our house. Private is also so expensive. We can do it but it’s going to require some planning.

I think it has gotten much worse than when we were kids and in large part because the bottom of the class is growing (in addition to everyone involved’s overall laziness and caring less).

Yeah, laziness, caring less, and overworked professional parents in these districts without a lot of free time to tutor. Kumon is big business these days.

Careful with private schools, more reputable and more expensive is not always better. Some of those are full of shitlibs. Our tuition is $20k per kid, which is a lot, but probably below average by private school standards. But the kids love it, there are no screens, small class sizes of 15 kids, I can't really complain for elementary school. When the stakes are higher we'll reassess again.

Ty. Sounds like you found a gem of a private school. So many are 45-55k which is just insane to me, particularly when they’re going to be inundated with lib nonsense that they can get for free at the public schools. I think I’m the only partner in my office who sends kids to public.

Both my kids have been doing Kumon for years. Elementary school curriculum in particular has been completely fucked by University of Chicago devised methods that are intended to make math more engaging, but leaves 95% of the class without any basic math skills.

I got them the Kumon books for this summer, one grade higher than the grade they are starting in the fall. So far the books are pretty easy for them.

The goal of Kumon is to build a very strong foundation. Some kids sort of think material is easy in concept but have difficulty getting problems right consistently in a reasonable amount of time. Those kids need to do more volume of that type of work until they can hit the standard.

Been doing this for 2 weeks now. It's been pretty great. But worried they'll be bored in school next year since workbooks are one grade above.
