one of the best things about my career is having an insiders look at a variety of different companies at the highest levels. and there isn't a single major industry that is not replete with fraud and lies.

my thoughts on why this happens in america specifically is our focus on individualism and aversion of collectivism. business regulations are a perfect example of this. when the debate happens, all you hear is one side saying "more regulations!" and the other saying "less regulations!" but how many of them even know w hat they're talking about specifically? the truth is that the whole scheme is fucked and the people the build, maintain, and operate it have incentives to keep it that way. commonly people will think "more regulations" will hurt big business, but i've seen it increase compliance costs in a way that disproportionately favors big business such that it makes it impossible for others to compete.

europeans are much more receptive to collective action through laws and regulation. when that's your starting point, then a debate can emerge about what those regulations should be. but a significant portion of the US starts with "ZERO REGULATION" and a significant starts with "MORE REGULATION", and the debate never gets to "what ARE the regulations?", which provides fertile ground for elites and toadies like me to grift.

i don't necessarily think their mindset is objectively better. the unique american spirit of individualism and self-reliance has created a culture where much new technology, wealth, industry, etc. comes from america. but i also think that's the primary reason the problems you cite exist. steinbeck's "temporarily embarrassed millionaires" is evergreen for a reason. which often results in people acting outside of their own interests, believing that it will interfere with the free market meritocracy that they think still exists, which i think you and i would agree it doesn't. recently i worked with a french company that wanted to institute french policy of forbidding working through lunch (it is literally illegal in france to eat at your desk). the US based locations of the company absolutely refused. interfering with an employees freedom to work through lunch is SACRED here in a way that was completely alien to the french, even when they were trying to create this policy. this wasn't just management, the workers were aghast as well. i think that's a small insight into american versus european attitudes towards law. americans want the least amount of law/policy as possible so as not to interfere with individual liberty, whereas europeans are fine with it, even though this often leads to inefficency and a more centralized bureaucracy that the united state's brand of spaghetti law.
