ND came off the "high" of beating the SEC foe and the 12th Man on the road. They basically fucked around all week at practice and came out flat in all stages of the game. Leonard was injured in his non-throwing arm and distrusted Denbrock's plan. Freeman was too scripted and NIU knew what he was calling. NIU wanted it like it was the Super Bowl. It was all kinds of flat.
So they came out of that and were like, we can never take any game, any series, any play for granted. Incredible galvanizing moment of the team. Freeman stopped trying to coach like Jim Tressel with a script and started using his own, more free and loose. Transfer QB with new OC got on the same page. O-line got experience.
ND would not be here without that NIU loss. They would have fucked up a couple of other games and they would have been "explained" away and they would have ended a dumb 10-2 with a first round road exit or 9-3.
