Subject: [Info] A message from Councilman Wolfson

To: boyd listserve

[I forward the message below at the request of Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Wolfson, who, as some of you know, also is a former federal and state prosecutor who now has a criminal defense practice. The Councilman is looking to address a critical need for school crossing guards in our city and seeks our assistance . . .]

-----

Forwarded by UNLV on 04/16/2008 01:52 PM -----

Dean ******:It was great meeting with you last week. We appreciate your time. Councilman Wolfson would like to encourage any William S. Boyd School of Law student interested in earning a few extra dollars, and helping our community, to consider applying to be a school crossing guard, through Metro's Crossing Guard program. There is a great need for crossing guards at the intersections of Maryland Parkway and Twain and at Twain and Swenson. The pay is $8.91 per hour and they are guaranteed 2.5 hours per day (just a little over $22 per day) . . .

Sincerely, ****** ***** Liaison to Councilman Steve Wolfson

There are a few firms in the $120-$140 range for 2,000 billables but they are generally small (i.e., 10 total attorneys) outposts of regional firms. The firms that do the most hiring (classes of 4-5 SAs) are in the $100 - $120 range for 1850 hours.

If memory serves, roughly 10-15 get jobs through OCI (in a class of 100). There are also a lot of 2-5 man shops in town which I have to imagine the top 5 person referenced earlier ended up.

The ones you mentioned will have 1 -2.

According to NALP, for 2008:

Snell: 2 summers, 4 first year assoc. starting $110k, 2000 hrs.

Lewis & Roca (I'm assuming this is who you meant): oddly, not on NALP.

Lionel Sawyer: no employment numbers listed. starting $110k, 1800 hrs.

KKBR: also no employment numbers listed. starting at $95k, 1900 hrs. only pay summers $1650.

Jones Vargas: 6 summers, 2 first year associates (that's no good, and has been consistent for the past three years). $102k starting. 1850 hrs.

Ballard: 2 summers and 1-2 first year associates. start at $133k. 1950 hrs.

Holland Hart: 2 summers, 1 associate and 3 laterals (looks like they're growing this office). start at $120k, 1800 hrs.

no one else has summer info or first year numbers listed (or only 1 in either category), so i assume opportunities are limited.

A bunch of people from my law school work in vegas. This is a lie because (1) they pay more than that and there's at least a few UNLV people at his firm and (2) the biglaw firms that roam the middle of the country are buying vegas up like crazy and paying non-coast biglaw rates. UNLV students don't do too well, but the good firms there pay of (and considering how cheap vegas is if you don't gamble, which is a problem...)

No but pre-UNLV law the majority of the locals went to one of those three schools so there are tons of alumni here who still hire from their alma maters.

Depends on what you mean. In NV, "gaming" law means regulatory where Brownstein and Lionel Sawyer do the bulk of the work.

For the non-regulatory work, no one really owns that market. It's pretty spread out. A couple of boutiques do specialized work with lots of gaming clients like GT and its IP practice and Kamer which does a lot of employment stuff.

Serious question: How hard to crack one of the better paying LV jobs from a T10 school?

I, like a poster before me, was once enthralled with the idea of living in Vegas. I've only visited a few times and have otherwise no connections, but think it would be pretty sweet to make $150k and get really good at poker.

That poster was me. From what I can tell, the best Vegas jobs are satellite offices from LA (and a few national firms). To get one of these, you need a great resume and legit Vegas connections.

I'm no longer planning on Vegas (but I'll be there 3x a year for the rest of my life if I'm lucky), but it would be quite the life.

EDIT: It basically the same as trying to get a job in any of the other sweet secondary cities with smaller legal markets... places like Philadelphia, Austin, Seattle, Madison, etc.

A better plan, make $160 somewhere else and make sure you blow ridiculous money once a year. The best way to do Vegas is to go all out for a short period of time. Once or twice a year stay at the Wynn, eat like a king, gamble big money, etc.

Yeah, that's where I stay. Fucking LOVE that place, especially the Ferrari/Maserati dealership on premises and the shopping.

I know it would be more fun to go all out, but it would be pretty badass to leave work and hit the tables for a bit with free drinks to unwind.

I spent a weekend at the Wynn a few months ago. I was able to scratch together about $1.5k for three days (not including airfare and the hotel bill, which was comped to a friend of a friend). One of the best weekends of my life. Imagine doing it with $6-8K and not giving a fuck if you left penniless. Ahhh biglaw, so close yet so far (I hate finals).

Then you can start playing $25 and $50 minimums on blackjack and not giving a fuck.

Seriously. Also, I know a guy who spent a year working in Vegas, and he tells me it kinda wears off. He stopped going to the strip, hated the heat and the traffic, wished he was in a real city, etc. But now he's part of my Vegas trip group, and he absolutely loves it... worth considering.

Vegas is a the strip, and a never ending strip mall. The way it grew so damn fast means that it is basically a series of gigantic McMansion housing developments extending into the desert. Each has a golf course, a mall with a Cheesecake Factory, and a Best Buy. It is a strange place to live (according to him, I've never left the strip except for a trip to Binions).

but on the strip there is world-class dining and entertainment. broadway shows come to vegas all the time, restaurants on par with nyc, dc, la (in fact, many of the same names). it is an ugly fucking desert though, compared to nice green places.

did he want small businesses ran by immigrants? corner delis? shit like that? (serious q)

edit: and with all the high-rises, it's starting to look like a real city.

I think to a degree yes.

Again, I'm speaking for him, but there's something unbelievably (and in my opinion gloriously) fake about Las Vegas. And while there is incredibly fine everything on the strip, it is a gigantic hassle as a resident. Crazy traffic (literally) 24 hours a day just makes it less likely to make it worth dealing with everything that comes with going inside a casino.

Basically a lot of the the reasons why Vegas is such a great place to visit (the excess, the vices, the freedom, etc.) make it a less than ideal place to live.

We had a long discussion about this (over drinks at Ghost Bar looking out on the city) and I was pretty surprised, but it makes some sense when you think about Vegas as compared to NY, LA, Chicago, really anywhere other than Phoenix or Orlando.

Yeah, but it's not like you can do those things regularly without going bankrupt.

One of the biggest problems is that the city is soul-less. There is no civic pride. Every man to himself in the world's largest strip mall/Applebee's. It can get to you when your neighbors have absolutely no interest in talking to you or people think that big living is going to the Rio buffet or Chili's.

You'd definitely get an interview even with terrible grades but you'd really have to convince them that you aren't there to just party. They are very wary of those types.

Fwiw, No one pays $150. 1 place at $140 and a few in the $120-130 range. $100-$120 more realistic.
