I've been traveling. Answer: hard to think of one biggest thing. Here are a few: Learned how to deal (not always effectively) with schizophrenic/schizoaffective offspring. In the work world learned how to: 1. raise money from institutional VCs and do an IPO. 2. do commercial real estate development. 3. develop a graduate level course from scratch and teach it. If you were thinking in terms of how to play tennis, golf, the banjo, clarinet, oboe or the piano, I did that before 40, though not particularly well in any case.

You were passionate about jet fuel being able to melt steel beams and also remotely collapse bld 7, by projecting a “structural failure” onto it

As I recall it all started with a discussion about how much thermal energy is in a tanker truck full of gasoline. FYI, you don't need to come anywhere close to melting a steel beam to cause structural failure. Thermal expansion increases tensile loads dramatically in long beams that are constrained at both ends. This can start happening as low as 200 degrees F depending upon the design. The structural steel used in buildings starts losing strength at around 400 F and dramatically at 500. By 1000 it's really soft. When you add in that the structure was disrupted by physical impact it gets even worse. This is why steel framed buildings have insulation or intumescent coatings sprayed on steel; however, they only slow down the process. If you can't get the fire out quickly the steel heats up anyway. Fire insulation ratings are something like 1-3 hours in most cases. Bare steel will fail in 20-30 minutes. REPEAT: you don't need to get even close to the melting point of steel for a structure to fail. Just use Google if you want to verify.

Is it your contention that the building was designed, even in the event of a massive and broadly disproportionate kinetic impact, to collapse into its own footprint in the event of weakened steel? I think that's the element that gives many people so much pause

Teaching is a lot of work, but it can be very rewarding. Don't underestimate the time commitment. I spent about half time over 6 months putting the course and the materials (basically wrote a textbook) together, then each time I taught it I revised maybe 10% of it. I did that for 5 years. I made a total of about $70K as an adjunct.

One thing I have been doing for the past 10 years is volunteer board work. I serve as the board president of a non-profit addiction treatment and prevention center and on the board and several committees of a local charitable foundation. Each one takes perhaps 2 days/month. Small non-profits have a lot of trouble getting decent board members, so they will value your service, you can meet different people, and maybe do some good.

Want to add a P.S. When I was working all I did was work and family. I tried a few extracurricular things, but found I didn't really have the time for it. Served on a school district budget committee once. That was one of the worst experiences of my life. Stay away from public school politics unless have you have think skin, tolerance for assholes, and lots of time. I did sit on several boards, but that was all business related. I used to resent how much evening time they chewed up.
