Why does a Porsche cost triple a BMW? What's the difference?

BMW has US factories. Porsche does not. Given tariffs this is significant.

No. You might be thinking Audi since a lot of them are the exact same platform. The Q7 and Cayenne are on the same platform, the Macan and Q5 are on the same platform, their EVs are on the same platform and basically the same car with minor differences. But they're also super expensive in the US for the same reason (factories are in Germany).
Basically, if you're American and want a German car then BMW is the obvious answer.

This is overrated, tbh. I just had BMW and Mercedes rentals back to back and preferred the BMW in pretty much every way including the interior.

Higher end model will win with any of the major German car brands for interiors.

Yes actually. I always used the depreciation to my advantage too. They also have a good CPO program so you can still get some warranty and they let you buy more years of coverage. Porsche does this too but with high resale values it isn't such a good value.

This. I have no need for a small sports car. But a 1k hp performance SUV is 180.

As others have pointed out, Porsche builds for sporting experience first in every product they release. And something like the 911 is a pure sports car built on a dedicated sports car platform, whereas even BMW’s sports cars are built on top of a base mainline product platform (eg the M3 is still built off of a regular 3 series platform).
Porsches are also far more connected to the road from a driver feel and engagement perspective, whereas BMWs have become extremely numb. Sure, many BMWs are fast, but you feel nothing driving them.
Strangely enough, the most engaging driver’s cars today primarily come from Porsche or Japan.

Yeah a lot of old japanese cars were fun because they were RWD and had good manual transmissions.
The answer to OP's question is that some Porsches put the engine in the ass-end and give you RWD plus a stick shift. That's an engineering feat no other company will attempt. The Porsches with the engine in the front are a different story.

Actually a bunch of them were FWD and still super fun - like the old Acura Integras. What made them fun was not that it was RWD vs FWD (many American alternatives were RWD) but that these cars were very light and the high revving Japanese engines made them far more agile/nimble than American cars of that era.

911 is closer to luxury sedan than pure sports car
Porsche has gotten farther away from the driving experience than BMW with their failed EV production and 4-door sedans beating 911 specs now on paper
M3 (and 2 and 4, 5 and 8 for that matter) all handle better than a basic 911
BMW had more manual stick shift options
And M cars have higher ADM by % than 911s last time I checked and the waiting list for an M3/M4 allocation was worse than a Rolex
Other than that I mostly agree with you

Porsche has the barest quantum of enthusiast prestige and aspirational nature left in their brand.
BMW is completely hollowed out and every single model is only purchased by the type of person whose primary goal is to signal status.

Yeah, to the extent they think about cars it is either a nice car or it is not. I guess there is about two levels of nice - BMW/Mercedes/Lexus/Porsche and then another step up for Ferrari/Lambo because they know they're more expensive.

A nice car that signals wealth/status is a plus. A normal car is neutral. A shitty car is a negative.
