Shitlib rock critics hated hair metal cause it was about young straight white men partying and getting laid. The critics and the rest of the cultural left prefer white straight men to be suicidal, depressed, and feminist. So Nirvana really was a reprieve for those types. (Funny how those same critics had no beef with black rappers acting 10x worse than hair metal guys w/r/t women.)

Honestly it's because back then they just recorded a lot of things cleanly. You can hear every string of the acoustic guitar. Lyrics are really clear without a lot of manipulation. Minimal reverb. I listened to it one time just now and remember everything.

Nirvana the vocals are all double tracked so it's garbled. To say nothing of whatever Kevin Parker does. "Someone left it chance for never, she was pulling out with Trevor. Like who the hell knows. 80s were Built Different.

I read somewhere that Butch Vig had to trick Kurt into double tracking the vocals on Nevermind. Kurt thought it sounded gay but Butch was really convinced that it would be a hit. So he apparently told Kurt that double tracking was really cool because John Lennon did it so he got Kurt to do another vocal take on Teen Spirit. And then he blended em together on the final cut.

This is really wrong and false. Hip hop was still emerging, but Jordan was already a towering figure asserting how absurd the caucasiocentic tendencies in pop culture were, and Tyson was like his black criminal nightmare mirror image. The crack epidemic and spike in gang violence was the major social issue of the entire period, and the general undercurrent in the culture was that the white suburb life celebrated in 80s sitcoms was a suffocating fraudulent self-concept that was desperately trying to cover up a host of problems. It was attacked on all sides by 1990 eg the entire Fox prime time lineup (Simpsons, Married with Children) plus Roseanne as a working class rust belt deconstruction, and you saw the white cultural hegemons already searching for how to react and adjust eg Marky Mark or Axl Rose being photographed wearing NWA and Public Enemy gear whenever possible.

If you think of the late 80s hair metal moment as continued reiteration of a bunch of musical and visual/fashion ideas that really emerged from the late 70s and the interplay between metal, punk and new wave, then it was the third iteration of the same impulse in rock toward a corrective, populist, DIY/Everyman aesthetic (first being the garage rockers of the early 60s, second being Ramones and early punk). But there’s really nothing much beyond remixing/recombining that emerges from all the metal/hard rock informed pop of the 80s that EVH and Randy Rhoads hadn’t already done better. I have a pretty distinct memory of watching MTV in the 89-90 range and the succession of videos went something like Warrant, Skid Row, Poison, Winger, Def Leppard, Motley Crue over the course of like an hour and my buddies and I discussed as like 4th-5th graders how it all sounded and looked the same.

I don’t really fuck with the Ramones. I acknowledge the credit they deserve for seeing the trend and articulating the archetype, but they’re surpassed by like 100 different bands in a matter of months. People who love The Ramones seem like those autist weirdos who get really fixated on weird tech niches like early laptop tech that sucked or Web 1.0 message boards.

The crazy thing about Aerosmith to me is that my 5 favorite songs of theirs are up there with anyone - The Cure, The Beach Boys, you name it - but I have no interest in anything else from them

(Because I know you're on the edge of your seat waiting to find out which ones:

The one from Armageddon, the 3 with Alicia Silverstone, and Jaded)

Dream On, Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way are iconic and necessary imo. Janies got a gun, love in an elevator, dude looks like a lady, Crazy, so many more. They were a real 70s rock band and then they transformed into a pop singles band. I think in the 90s they were just trying to make as much money as possible.

Rock had gone into this cheesy, studio produced hair bands with make-up style in late 80s. Nirvana and the other grunge music came out sounding raw and rebellious. It was fucking refreshing and blew the doors off what was going on.

Why does everyone talk about hair bands. REM was already Huge before Nevermind was recorded. U2, Metallica, INXS, the list goes on. Was Metallica’s Hair too long?

Haha, Metallica isn't a hair band. We referred to hair bands as shit like Poison and White Snake. All the bands you mention were well liked.

I used to like Poison when I was a little kid, but in hindsight they were bubble gum hair metal and kind of suck IMO

Did you edit this from “kid” to “little kid” lol

Little kids barely know what music is.

hot take that I would never have thought years ago but is more clear now and well established on these forums - Ozzy Osbourne was not "hair metal."

He had a phase with the big hair etc, but it never officially qualified as hair metal

He was basically a pop star with hard rock background, like michael jackson
