Shenmue is one of those games that you aren’t supposed to ever actually play. Just a generic impressive Dreamcast title that we cite when lamenting its demise. Many such cases btw:
1. Shenmue
2. Planescape: Torment
3. Pathologic / Pathologic 2
4. Morrowind
5. Dark Souls II
6. Disco Elysium
7. The Witness
8. Death Stranding
9. Journey
10. Kentucky Route Zero
11. Shadow of the Colossus
12. Spec Ops: The Line
13. Ico
14. Outer Wilds
15. Nier

haven't played it yet, but my understanding is that it is sort of an action puzzle game, where you have to get past obstacles with your companion.
Shadows of the Collossus was kind of like this too but instead you had to figure out how to defeat huge beasts. It had the breath of the wild climbing dynamic down really well.
PS2 was an awesome Gen (shared with Gamecube)
