Brutally obscure grammar rule alert

"Les rois qui se sont succédés de père en fils." would fit the ordinary pattern. I have no idea what obscure grammar rule might be relevant here.

I'm wondering if, because the succession is in only one direction from one to the other (singular to singular), it ought to be succédé, or some weird shit like that.

Go on ....

The answer is «Les rois se sont succédé de père en fils»

Reasoning is that you have a pronomial verb. Les rois is an indirect object. To put it into a cohesive example in English it would be like a saying "From one to the other were the kings succeeded from father to son." Se is basically the direct object. De l'un a l'autre ont succédé les rois de père en fils. The se replaces the subject of the sentence.

This is a famous test question that trips people up who don't know the RULE.

FIN

see below I just remembered this part of conjugating reflexive verbs, you have to look at whether the underlying verb takes a COD or COI

Even a lot of French people don't know this rule. I've seen countless slip up on this. It's a very prole country lol not many are super literate. They also spell a ton of shit wrong like they write un cauchemard when there's no D because the verb is cauchemarder. I've corrected hundreds of French ppl tee hee.

So true

Like go anywhere in the country side and they have no idea about anything. I've met people in France who have zero understanding about the existence of the English language. They couldn't even begin to understand how many English loan words exist in their language. They literally think le week-end is just some really goofy unusual French word. I'm like dude there's a whole country 20 minutes north of here as the crow flies. And they have a whole different set of words. You might want to look into this phenomena... *drooling blank stare*

They are a people who ancestrally knew about their little valley and that's it. Versus the "island people" as you say, who always looked out to sea and to a wider world. We still see the same difference today - the English-speaking peoples including Americans are much much more outward looking than the euros. Americans generally know much more about and are much more comfortable with the notion of an outside world than euros. Yet euros think that because they spent a week at the beach at a Club Med knock-off in Italy one time, they are world travelers. Yet nowhere does the outside world seem so distant to me as when I am in Europe. Frankly, for all europe's charms and my own personal connections to the place, I cannot stand euros, they are bitter little midgets.

I couldn't agree more and it's so bizarre I think if you look at the fact that even as recently as the late 19th century and probably even heading into WWI these countries were widely thought of to be THE WORLD. And they thought they were fighting over the world. We called it the World War. It was almost entirely fought in northern France and in Belarus but it was still somehow the World War.

And since 1914 it's just been on a downward trajectory ever since. It's oddly like walking through the Roman ruins. You marvel at the genius of their ancestors but you can't meet anybody who had anything to do with it. It's truly a collapsed state and it just gets worse all the time.

strike that, reverse it

it is "succéder à qqn/qqch" i.e. it takes an indirect object (COI), so the PP is invariant

--> ils se sont succédé
