No one was saying "oh let's write down some doctrine and cram it down everyone's throat, btw let's borrow some political ideas from the emperor and do it in Rome."

What actually happened was that christian communities formed all over, with no central authority or anyone telling them what to do. Some of these communities started doing and believing wild things, others weren't so sure. This went on for CENTURIES before we had The Pope.

At the same time, they all considered themselves Christian and understood the story of Jesus, so it wasn't entirely random. It had to have all begun with people speaking authoritatively about the life of Jesus, because there's no other way you could have Christians living 1000 miles apart who understood the story the same way. There was no Bible at this time, and no one could read.

All you have to do is figure out HOW that happened, WHO was spreading the message early on, and WHAT they said to everyone, before the ensuing chaos. If you think you've got that figured out, there's your Catholic church. The end.

if there's one things human beings are good at

its working together on some huge constructive thing as a large secretive group and all coming correct about it

You're welcome to revisit the debates people were having at the time. None of it is "hidden knowledge." If someone took the time to write a letter and send it to a bunch of churches, we have it.

the papacy was a last ditch effort to control the west that devolved into one city and bunch of warlords, frankly if charlemagne hadn't granted it legitimacy the whole thing would probably be gone by now

what part of the keys of the kingdom of heaven and apostolic succession do you poli sci shitheads not understand? sometimes peoples' reasons for believing or doing things are, in fact, their stated reasons.

Apostolic succession is the worst justification for founding a church except for all the other justifications.

this is not accurate. The pope in its current form came out of a self-interested power grab by Rome. The churches were in relatively strong agreement through the 1st millennium, and Rome was used by general agreement to resolve disputes in an advisory capacity. Over time, Rome began to see itself as having de jure authority, which the other churches never accepted, and will never accept.

How are you supposed to amplify the doctrine if every community understands it differently? And where else would you do it except in the capital? That's why I'm saying it was driven by EVENTS. If Antioch had been politically powerful the church would have been based there.

i dont know what "amplify the doctrine" means.

You're right, Rome was given a position of honor in resolving disputes through events that led to the other churches respecting it, but it never had legal authority over other churches.

We didn't even have a New Testament until about 400AD. Until then we had apostolic fathers you know nothing about. You couldn't name one and explain why he was important.
