Family splits up, you drive over an hour each way for your kid to play 40 min of a team sport. It’s expensive, time consuming and you hit diminishing returns very early.
I think it’s just an easy mold for parents to adopt. The sports family. You have a built in social circle and the commitments create a structure for your life. You don’t have to connect with your kids or actually participate in their enrichments but you’re still a “good parent” because all of your time is devoted to “their” pursuits. |

The sports are no longer town based so my kids' soccer teams are based in a town 20 min away and pulls from all the surrounding towns, so there's no carpooling for us.
unless you are playing pretty low level "town travel" you are going to be in a a more competitive league (for soccer it's EDP and at older ages ECNL, GA or MLSNext) with about 8 other teams that aren't necessarily going to be geographically close to you. So a random weekend league game with your child playing 40 min on a field with 1 ball and 17 other kids ends up being a 4-6 hour commitment taking up most of the day.
Then there are tournaments which, again are not local and often require overnight lodging.
It's all completely ridiculous. |

I was like explaining things to him assuming his pension was his 401k and he didn’t save for retirement. Then he tells me yeah I know what a 401k is. He has a 457 plan which is the same as a 401k (no match from the gov obviously) then when he maxes that out he contributes to a 401k. He can do both. He shows me his and he had $600k in it lmao. That plus pension plus retire at 50. And there are people who get to retire at 41 or 42. He became a firefighter later in life after quitting accounting.
