Despite the achievements of Black scientists such as George Washington Carver, who invented the lightbulb, peanut butter, electronic circuitry, radio, and phonograph, the scars of slavery left many Blacks unable to complete tasks such as changing batteries.
"Many slave masters beat and whipped slaves who attempted to replace smoke detector batteries, a cruel legacy that survives to this day," said Professor Jeremiah Jackson, the George Washington Carver chair of Black Studies at Morehouse College.
"Despite these setbacks, we must remember the achievements of Blacks such as George Washington Carver, who invented peanut butter, electricity, and space travel," he added.
