he got into a fraud 6 year pharm.d program. they offered him a "$25k scholarship" that they offer probably to everyone. total cost will be north of $300k

Why is it 6 years? Is it UG+grad school or something?

For academic subjects, 100% of PhDs that the candidate pays for are flame. They should be funded by the school + a stipend (based on the candidate's lab work, research, and/or teaching). Is that not the case with a Pharm.D.?

How is the quality of the school? Would he be doing work with his 6 year, $300k (plus opportunity costs!) investment that he couldn't do with a 2 years my masters in bio or something?

yes, it's an accelerated program. normally to become a pharmacist you need 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of pharmacy school.

it's not really an academic doctorate, more of a professional doctorate like a JD. so you pay for that shit.

school is a TTT but prestige doesn't matter for pharmacy school. and yeah you need a pharm.d to be pharmacist.

out the school

there very much is prestige in pharmacy schools, but the schools at the top of the list would surprise you

Pharm.D. is a "professional" degree like an MD or DDS. They even have an equivalent of "residency" although it's optional. Pharmacists are a cartel which basically have no reason to exist in a world where everything is digitized, but they've never been enough of a drain for anyone to really care about killing the industry. That could certainly change though as their role becomes increasingly trivial.

It's certainly a less secure path than an actual doctor, not something worth investing 300k in (especially given pharmacists obviously do not make as much as doctors).

The separate register at the pharmacy, not the front of store registry. 1/2 their job is just having people pick up and pay for shit at the register.

Imagine going to school for all those years, learning hard science and shit, and then having the assistant manager of a shitty CVS explain to you “yeah, we got a mandate from corporate to cut staff and we need to keep Joe up by the self-checkout because our customers are too retarded to use it and bums keep stealing the toothpaste and ice cream, but anyway it turns out you have enough time to fill all the scrips and run the register, so let’s try you doing both without a tech and see how long it takes for you to keel over. No you don’t get a raise this year - that goes to the CEO and the shareholders.”

Is Pharm D cr for research and new drug development, as opposed to counting out pills and looking up contraindications? Or is that all done by people with MDs and chemistry PhDs?

it's so unnecessary, 90% of them end up working as quality control drones checking decimal points and overriding computer alerts. alternatively, we should really cut them loose to make low level diagnoses and prescriptions, they're wildly underutilized.

Here is my uneducated take on this: it is almost certainly a cash grab on a very vulnerable segment of the population to try to trap them into 6 years of tuition with poor prospects after graduation.

there are instances in which i could see something like this making sense - if for example, new mexico was short on recruiting family doctors or nurses to live in their state, i could imagine implementing a program whereby essentially trapping a 24 year old into a local practice would make sense for both parties.

i dont know enough about pharm but i assume life will be quite different in 2032. seems like a major red flag to me hermano
