Connectomics will make competent physical autonomy cheap enough to become disposable.
Current AI already supplies much of the higher-level capability: Gemini Robotics 2 demonstrates visual reasoning, multistep planning, learned motor control, and limited multi-robot collaboration, with an on-device model for local execution. Sure, these are research demonstrations rather than evidence of battlefield reliability, but the starting point is no longer hypothetical.
The fly connectome maps circuitry linking sensory inputs to movement. The breakthrough would be extracting computational principles that make machine perception and reflexive control substantially smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient. There are preliminary footholds: connectome-informed controllers have improved learning efficiency in simulated flies, while separate research has demonstrated onboard neuromorphic vision and control in real flying drones. Neither establishes the full military extrapolation, but that's indisputably where the research is going.
Assume that research succeeds. The result would be drones with sophisticated environmental interpretation but insect-like computational economy: reacting to disturbances, negotiating unfamiliar surroundings, and continuing to function without continuous remote instructions. This would not invent autonomous flight; it would lower the hardware and supervision costs of making autonomy more capable and widespread.
In that scenario, autonomous warfare's limiting factors increasingly become batteries, manufacturing capacity, and replacement rates--not the supply of pilots.
